Yeah, a pit of Piranha plants sounds more likely.
They wouldn't squish as easily. The point is, after his wife had served her purpose (giving him his seven children) and after his children failed to get rid of Mario too many times, Bowser did away with them.
Chances are, eventually he will do away with Bowser Jr as well.
