i like parts of it, but not the image as a whole. It seems to me that if you did some cropping, or maybe just re-shot witha simmilar technique it could be really interesting.

One of the main issues I see with this picture is that the colored lighting seems very deliberate, but without explaination. When you do the images with the wash of wierd colors (like the ones from your birthday) the light takes on the character of being the atmosphere, and thus does not need explaination. The shots with the shiny foil/wrapping paper stuff, the light is explained by the surface it is reflecting off of. The monochrome washes again take the character of atmospheric. The lighting here makes me wonder why it's colored. Seems like it should have purpouse or explaination in this context.

The lighting technique itself isnt really weak, it's the context.
