The softness of light around the hair and hands, where the forms blend into the background, giving the piece atmosphere....was this done at the end?...... or did you head in this direction from the beginning, by keeping these areas low contrast?

The soft light was done just after the background and just before the wings. I added some adjustments at the end with "luminosity" and "color" type layers with low opacity.
