Agent Ford does more digging and finds that a good chunk of McLeach's issues stem from a very violent, unstable home life. The McLeach family had a fair bit of press over the years due to several incidents. One of the ones I headcanon Ford to get emotional over is learning about Joanna McLeach. (And yes, Percival named his lizard after his mother.)

She was clearly a battered wife who finally had enough of the way her drunkard husband treated her and their children, but was so damaged from the years of abuse that the best thing that could have been done for her during that time period was to be sent to a sanitorium, which unfortunately led to even more problems for Percival and his little brother Casey (which you will find out about in future artwork!)
