Description
Aurora and a dime for scale. The sculpture is about 3.75" x 2", made from Canson and Canford papers. This is the second of four pieces that will make a larger piece.Working on this scale presents some challenges. Aside from cutting out small pieces of paper, like pupils, layering is a big issue. Aurora's hair and skirt required a number of layered sections which caused some unwanted wrinkling at her waist. I think I fixed that with some foam core supports, but it isn't quite what I wanted.
I'm also not crazy about the color of her sleeves and waist. I wish I had a slightly different shade of pink, but the only other one I could find was too candy-like.
I'm not sure of the total time, but I do know her face, hair, neck/shoulders and necklace and crown took about 2 hours to cut out and assemble.

Splendid work! I really love this technique!!
Just curious: I assume that coloring the paper by itself, perhaps with the airbrush, to get the shades you want, presents problems...

Thank you very much for your thoughtful compliment and comment.
Matching colors is challenging at times. I actually don't color the paper in any way, but use colored papers. The papers I use comes in a pretty wide variety of colors, though there are occasional challenges, especially with yellow hues.

That is... wow... That is really impressive. The dementions (sorry i can't spell right now.) give it a quality similar to the background paintings in the movie. Very lovely.

Thank you! One of the things I tried to capture is the weight of her skirt and hair. I loved how they animated her in the movie and how her skirt and hair moved.

I don't mind at all, but using the Disney drawings is probably better as they set the standard.

Thanks! Aurora's character design is really suited to this medium. Her dress has so many folds and seams, it really works well. Out of all the Princesses, it is the most fun and and easiest to make.

Thank you so much. Aurora has always been one of my favorite character designs. The weight of her hair and dress and the stylized imagery were just beautiful. The dress on this piece is made of 31 separate pieces of paper, but went together very quickly.

Thanks very much! Now that I think of it, no, I haven't done any comic characters other than manga characters (Priss and the Ah My Goddess group). I do have one I am thinking of doing, but make no promises as I have other projects to finish first.

Ha! I too often find some unwanted wrinkling around my waist!
Great job! Love the hair and her eyes.
I see what you mean about the color paper used for the waist and sleeves. The texture looks so different from the rest of the paper - almost felt-like. But that being said it certainly doesn't detract from the totality of the piece!

Don't we all?
Thanks! I wasn't sure her eyes wold read as well on this scale. I think her eyebrows are a little heavy on the second look, but not a big enough issue to fix given the risk of damage to the rest of her face. The sleeve color looks better in the photo than in reality. It is a very gray pink, but it was the lesser of two evils.

What type of paper are you using? Are you buying it already colored or do you color it?

paperfetish In reply to ShellzSnipitz [2008-03-18 00:34:37 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. This piece is made of Canson and Canford papers. I use more Canson because I like the texture, but the Canfor paper is less fibrous (especially the black paper) and it seems to hold shaping really well. Both companies offer a fairly wide variety of colors (30-40) and I cut the shapes from the different colors rather than coloring them.
