Credit to the guy who made the characters Jolly and George, which aren't mine.

I'm in the camp that FNAF 2 is a sequel to the original game, but the way I imagine it is that it takes place at the same time as the first game, maybe the location in the first game might've been in some shitty place in Boston while the one in the second game was obviously a more expensive and cleaner location in Seattle due to the brand probably being as big as the Tayto man. Also the withered animatronics and the ones from the first game are different because of the endoskeletons and the sizes, they're completely different from one another. Like in my mind the withered ones were taken over by the four boys who threw the kid into Fredbear's mouth in the fourth game while the ones from the first game were taken over by the five children who were probably killed in the kitchen, all nine of these kids being victims to the Purple guy's BTK rampage. Bind, Torture, Kill.

It would explain the reason why the phantoms in the third game are a mix between the withereds and the classics, instead of the classics on their own.
