Description:
Qualities
Discipline II - This barlak is not easy to distract or dissuade and, though it may be a challenging beast in general, will respond to a firm, consistent hand from a disciplined trainer. It may or may not be particularly obedient or diligent, but once it's in action and has its mind on a goal, it's very hard to break its focus. This barlak does not suffer any penalties that would usually be incurred for distractions (crowd noise, strong/weird smells, intact barlaks exposed to other intact barlaks and thus tempted to either court or seek dominance instead of doing whatever they're supposed to be doing), conditions (rain, mud, fog...) or similar.
Independent I - A valuable trait in some contexts and a real pain in the butt in others. Independent barlaks are intelligent and have more advanced reasoning capabilities than average. While still animals, they are *smart* animals, and do not look to a person automatically for leadership or direction the way that a more thoroughly domesticated barlak will. Often found in wild-blooded and feral-born bars, and in certain purebreds and Working class grades whose job requires or benefits from an independent temperament and an ability to make solo decisions. They do not listen well as a rule and, while they can score highly in Obedience, they require skilled, strong-minded trainers and handlers, and there is always a higher chance than average that they will purposefully ignore you or do what -they- think is correct. (Sometimes they're even right, but that doesn't help much.)
Strong Body II - This is a well-muscled animal with sturdy bones and a solid physique. Slight reduction to chance of injury during risky activities. Gains a score bonus in events where strength is an advantage proportionate to the level of the trait. Gains a bonus to health and soundness evaluations when a show, event, or competition requires such.
Hot Blooded - This barlak has a fiery, proud, no-holds-barred temperament, throwing everything it has into its work without hesitation. While this makes the barlak potentially difficult to handle, it also produces a distinctive high-flown, full-throttle way of moving that is highly prized in some breeds and working contexts. This trait is especially valued in racing and hunting bars. Racers tend to refer to this as "heart", while to hunters it is "fire" or "spirit". Gains a bonus to hunting and racing, but takes a penalty to Obedience. In Show barlaks, this is pretty close to a Flaw, since it makes them difficult to handle without providing much compensating benefit. Still, they do gain a small bonus in shows that emphasize beautiful movement, such as the more intense/active forms of dressage (say, freestyle musical.)
Low Rider III - This barlak has somewhat shorter legs than normal, but not enough so to cause any joint problems or other health issues. He or she gains a bonus to competitions and activities where being low to the ground is helpful, such as tunnel hunting and tracking through dense underbrush. There is a corresponding penalty to competitions and activities where being short or having short legs is a disadvantage. Breeding Level III Classic Low Rider barlaks to each other has a chance to produce (the upcoming short-legged/dwarf body type that doesn't exist yet.) Breeding Level III Low Rider (tall sighthound build that doesn't exist yet) to each other has a chance to produce the Classic build.
Balanced Conformation I - Overall, this barlak's various body parts are all correctly formed (no hip dysplasia or other malformations/health problems) and in correct proportion to each other, based on the average presentation of a healthy, sound member of this barlak's build. This type of conformation is selected for by many breeds of all three classes. However, almost all Working and Sporting breeds select for this Quality, because such bars must be sound and healthy to perform at their sport or job. For Show barlaks of the Classic build, having Balanced Conformation provides a small bonus to their score in conformation shows.
Flaws
Weak Sperm I - The opposite of, and mutually exclusive to, Virility. Only male barlaks can express this. Females who would inherit it get Weird Eggs instead. A male barlak with this Flaw has his maximum clutch size reduced by 1 at level 0. At level I, his chance to pass down his Flaws increases by 10%. At level II, his clutch size penalty is -2. At level III, before clutch size is rolled, an additional check must be rolled to see if the female is even impregnated. If the breeding fails, the female's monthly breeding is not used up, and neither barlak loses a breeding slot, et cetera. However, no eggs are produced for the mating, and the player must repost if they wish to try breeding the same pair again.
Devotion - This barlak is loyal to a fault. It views itself as having exactly one master, and will obey only that person. A primary trainer/handler character must be chosen for this barlak, and it cannot be changed unless the barlak is sold or given to a new owner. This person will always be the primary handler, and the barlak will always perform best for this person, in that they will not have any penalties to their performance.
At level zero, this can be overcome with training. Specifically, you must focus train in “Extra Handler”, with each handler counting as a new “skill”. At 10 XP, the barlak can begin working with its new handler, but all training that is not in Extra Handler, all activities, and all shows/competitions, will suffer a significant penalty reflecting the barlak’s lack of interest or motivation to perform for this new person and its high odds of refusing to obey or acting out. At 25 XP, the penalty is cut in half. At 50 XP, it drops to 1/4th its original value. At 75 XP, the penalty is reduced to 10% of its original value. At 100 XP, it is entirely eliminated. Each trainer is a new Skill, but at level zero, there is no limit on how many new trainers the barlak can be adapted to, and its trainer skills are wiped when it changes ownership, allowing it to be retrained to work with new handlers.
At level I, the barlak’s handler skills are still wiped when it changes ownership. However, it cannot advance past 75 XP in each Extra Handler skill.
At level II, the barlak’s handler skills are still wiped when it changes ownership. However, it cannot advance past 50 XP in each New Handler skill, and it cannot be adapted to more than three handlers/trainers at a time. Once its three handlers are chosen, it cannot gain more until it changes ownership.
At level III, the barlak cannot learn New Handler at all - it has exactly one person to whom it is loyal, and that’s that. When it changes ownership, the new owner must train in New Trainer to transfer the barlak’s loyalty from the old owner’s trainer character to their own trainer character. (Yes, these barlaks are a real pain in the ass. Try not to breed carelessly and allow this Flaw to get out of control.)
Tail Kink I - There's a subtle kink in the barlak's tail. At the level of a Flaw, it isn't visible, but it can be detected by running one's hands over the tail and feeling the vertebrae. Although, in and of itself, it causes no real harm to the barlak at lower levels, higher levels can lead to Injury-Prone (Tail) developing in its descendants, or even more serious spinal deformities. Causes no harm in and of itself, but does have levels and increase in severity if ignored. Breeding level II x Level II and higher can produce Injury-Prone (Tail) in the offspring (even those which do not inherit Tail Kink). Breeding Level III x Level III can produce the Variation Kinked Tail.
