I'm not an expert when it comes to next gens but I was inspired by FriendshipIzFucked to make my own do's and don'ts. I made one a while ago but it's kind of outdated so I made a new one

DO:
Pony on the left is still a Tenderbloom kid but I mixed not only Apple Bloom and Tender taps colors together but as well as Apple Bloom's family's colors. If we knew who Tender's family was I would add their colors into the mix.

I really like the look of apple family next gens having braids so she gets the braids. You don't have to make the same hair style directly of the parents. Look at the parents siblings, parents, and even grandparents. So if you want your apple kid to have curly hair, go for it since Pear butter has curls (This goes for Sugar Belle as well as Grandpear)

AVOID:
Now their is nothing completely wrong with the pony on the right but it's overdone. Children in real life don't look exactly as their parents but they do have similar traits to their parents so avoid making next gen's blatant copies. Even though the colors are mixed around it's still too close to her parents. It's not shown here but please do not give your oc's two different eye colors. At this point it looks lazy and you don't care about your oc's. I have seen a lot of oc's like this and I'm sick of it. This is a major thing when it comes to designing, DO NOT GIVE YOUR OC'S MARKING WHEN NO ONE IN THE FAMILY HAVE THEM! (www.deviantart.com/xxpastelpaw… Please look at the lyra bon kid I made on the right as an example) Best examples with these markings are Pipsqueak, Sunburst, Trouble Shoes, Cadence, Flurry Heart, and MAYBE Luna. (A royal problem shows the black patch on Celestia in A Royal Problem but in Twilight's Kingdom when Luna's moon cutie mark is gone, the black patch is still there)This goes with freckles as well. Since many apple family members have freckles, then add them in. Not the same ship but since we know who dash's canon parents are, you can give your dash kid's freckles since Windy has them.

Since the apple family usually have cutie marks that relate to apple's or other fruit it's okay to add some type of apple or fruit and gardening cutie marks but don't make it the exact same as the parents. Children can develop similar traits as their parents but many don't end up having the same job as their parents. Don't mash cutie marks together as well. As an example don't give your cmc kids shield cutie marks. (I have seen people give their cmc next gen's the same cutie marks as their parents. Yes I know they are trio but even Babs doesn't have a shield cutie mark and she is a cmc too) Cutie marks are what makes a pony special. Having the exact cutie mark of their parents makes your kid special but not in the good way. Play around with names as well. Avoid names like Apple steps Apple Blossom, etc. If you want to add anything apple related do it as accessory instead. They are still tied to the apple family but not a complete copy.

Please don't mash mane and tail styles together. As stated above when it came to having oc's with two eye colors, it is lazy. I understand that manes and tails are tricky to draw. I still struggle with them and I have been making next gens since I was a kid. (My old Mane 6 used to look like this www.deviantart.com/stash/0qj09… )

A few sites I use are medibang which is free to download and the smudge tool. Vector wise you could use bases (I recommend SelenaEde the best but download the base or the photo is pixilated and the colors are hard to pick) and mlpvector.club/cg/pony/full . I also use colors.dopely.top/color-blende… (vex codes can be found on mlp vector club) If you can't find a character there you can use coolors.co/32292f-575366-6e7da… and import the file and pick your colors. For MS paint, use the line tool on the biggest size and lay out your colors then use the marker tool over the lines with the other characters colors (I use this method for my Fry and Leela kids on my futurama tumblr) You can also use the crayon tool just like you would use medibang with the smudge tool
