Description
Finally finished this painting, “You Know Who We Are”.Oil in canvas
This painting has taken me over a year to finish, but now that I’ve finished it, I can share a little about it.
This painting is a reflection of my views on life, the human condition, and my constantly-evolving thoughts on why we are here.
Over the past years, I’ve described my beliefs and views as a mixture of Buddhism, Pantheism and Nihilism. Obviously all of the “definitions” to these isms contradict one another, but rather than saying I identify with one or the other, I identify with different aspects of each. In the painting, the table leads into an intersection of different worlds or realities. The table has an hour glass sitting on it, which to me resembles time and the fact that time is never permanent, yet once you turn the hour glass over, you have a new amount of time in another direction. I guess this is a reflection of my belief in life, in that I don’t know necessarily know what happens when our time on earth ends, but that our consciousness continues. Not saying I believe our consciousness continues as an individual “I” or “Me”, but rather as a collective consciousness. The hour glass also resembles a figure 8, which is a symbol of something continuous...never-beginning and never-ending. I see life as something that we are going in and out of constantly, as well as something we are constantly manifesting. I believe everything and anything we choose to see is something we have the ability to manifest and create into our physical reality. That being said, I don’t always believe that any of it truly matters.
Humans love to personalize experiences and create meaning within everything we do, and though I believe we are our own gods within ourselves, I think at the end of the day, all of the little problems and situations happening on this earth are relatively meaningless in the grand scheme of everything outside.
I was reading an article about size comparisons in the universe. In it, I read that if the Sun (which is 109 times the diameter of earth) were the size of a white blood cell, the United States would be the size of the Milky Way galaxy. This left me really contemplating how little and meaningless we are within the universe. Outside of our little planet in space is a death trap for humans, so all we have to survive is on a tiny dot floating through what we define as outer space. This painting shows the different earth-like worlds we move in and out of, with the universe dominating above. There’s much more to be said about this painting, but I also prefer to leave a lot for people to interpret themselves.
