Description
Remember a few days ago I made a little sketch collection of some of my OCs styled in Don't Starve, and how one of them was a grey dino thing I haven't shared here on DA before? Well, this is him here.A few weeks ago, I sporadically got brain rot over the earliest reconstructions of the Megalosaurus back in the 1850's, I just found the contrast of how scientists in Paleontology's infancy thought the Megalosaurus and other dinosaurs looked compared to how they'e more or less suppose to look now to be hilarious. So much so, that I just said fuck it, and made a character out of the silly Victorian Lizard in the form of a reference sheet. Those who follow me on Art Fight would know what his deal in in his character description, but for the rest of yous here, I might as well copy paste what I wrote for Grave's backstory and personality on AF into here.
Graves here is a genetic experiment made by a scientist who firmly believed that the first reconstructions of the Megalosaurus (and other Dinosaurs like him) being a quadruped were right, reguardless of his fellow colleagues proving it was a biped. To show them that they were full of rubbish, the scientist got to work and genetically engineered his own "Megalosaurus" in his image.
Soon enough, with the aid of some of the Megalosaurus fossils, along with collected DNA samples of various lizards and bears(and/or possibly some black magic, I'll workshop it), the creature was miraculously brought to life, near perfectly matching the physical description of the hypothetical reconstruction (sideways pinky claws and pronounced ear holes not withstanding). After a short while of observations however, seeing it supposedly trying and failing to stand and walk on it's hind legs for some reason, the eventful day came where the beast broke loose, killed and ate the scientist who made it, and ran off into the English Woodlands.
Since then, it has been occasionally spotted by frightened civilians, sometimes mistaking it for an enormous crocodile, or a long nosed bear, or a Dragon, or even some claiming it to be the actual Megalosaurus. Curiously though, after the scientist who made it (who was never heard from again), it was never seen actually attacking or killing any live persons on record. Occasionally you'd get claims of it going after livestock or ailing horses, but it seems to have adopted more of a scavenger's lifestyle, and is most reported going after recently deceased people. It's with this particular approach to getting food that gave the creature it's nickname, Graves.
While he certainly looks like a deformed, horrifying monster, Graves is mostly a passive creature, never outwardly hostile towards people (albeit potentially defensive at first), and in the right environment, could be rather tame.
One thing that kinda makes him a bit of a loony though is his occasional tendency to try and walk on his hind legs, and more often hilariously failing. At first, it was thought to be some form of practicing some sort of pouncing maneuver (or some of that Bear DNA kicking in) or maybe that he wanted to mimic humans in a way. In reality however, it's because he was partially under the assumption that he was an ACTUAL Megalosaurus upon his creation. Cus in the future, the real Megalosaurus WAS revealed to be a full on Biped.
Of course, being a big carnivorous reptile, he can be put off or angrily set off by things like hunger, sudden pain, or even the sight of lab coats given his history, so while he isn't a total savage, he can be quite dangerous.
To be fair though, he's only ever killed a man to eat them once, and as mentioned before, he's more of a scavenger than an active hunter. His diet usually consisting of those who were recently deceased; bodies buried in cemeteries or people's back yards, other times those who've been shot dead, hung or otherwise killed, if it's dead, he'll almost always go after it. Consequentially, this has led to some places nearly considering him a beast of burden for robbing graves (the burial ground ones that is), so he has to be careful with how he goes about getting his food stuffs from cemeteries.
