Description
As I work standing in front of the huge floor to ceiling storefront windows at the marble countertop. I stare out into the street, watching the world.  At slower points through out the night most of the staff can be seen here as well, gazing out into the less safe, less clean world of our little town.
Katie, Kelly and I are doing just that.  Standing at the window, watching the sun and the world as it goes on around our little Italian restaurant.  We watch the cold wind and its effects on the people in that outside world as we stand in the still stagnant heat of the pizza oven.
Becki and Yaffe emerge from the door to the upstairs apartments.  A newly wed couple with smiles on their faces.  She has a blanket wrapped around her shoulders like a cape; he’s wearing a dirty white t-shirt and ripped jeans.  When they reach his car he opens the door for her and shuts it when she gets in.  She smiles up at him as she slides in to the car, and he looks down at her with unashamed love in his eyes.  Every move that they make tells secrets of their life together.
I don’t notice the yearning silence until Kelly breaks it.
“He does that for her every single time she gets in the car.”  Her tone is sad and empty.  I turn and look at her, and at Katie standing beside her.  Kelly is eight months pregnant and she has been married for two.  19 years old, we all fear her husband and his temper, Kelly has never known romance.
Katie is 17 years old.  She came from a rough home, a rough life, notorious with men, and when Ben proposed it seemed like a dream come true.  And when he went back to college and broke it off it seemed like hell.
Then there’s me, whose boyfriend cheated on her three times before they officially broke up. Feeling like I deserved it, feeling like it was my fault.
There must be hope for us. Somewhere there must be hope for our broken and shattered romantic ideals.
