Toriel was being a tad obsessively protective mother figure by nearly trapping Frisk in her home by destroying the exit. She has suffered much grief, that's obvious after the fact of reveal within the game, especially when Frisk asks "When can I go home?" and she answers "This is your home now." Of course, first time playing it, I thought that moment was creepy and figured she was psychotic and eats humans :v

Though after the battle with her, she breaks down, realizing her faults (or perhaps mistakenly kills you or you mistakenly kill her) and lets you go after proving yourself.
