i think it's in ref to the fact that he wasn't so uptight and was more prone to his human emotions. the fact that his brother in arms was turned against him and enslaved was too much for him to hold back too.

Not all of the things in MK9 were his fault but he did mess up in some parts.
Personally I think Quan Chi and the Elder gods are the main douchebags in the story mode.
