Across the valley there's a remote outpost of empires, a fort so old it has grown one with the hills. It's flown many flags - Rajput, Mughal, Afshari, Marhatha, British - but like all forts it's patiently outlasted the men who've held it. You can follow the gothy archaeologist there, and maybe you'll get the answers you're looking for. Or maybe you just like following the gothy archaeologist.
I've been reading Winston Churchill's book about the Northwest Frontier lately, and this is based a bit on that and a bit on some of the forts I've seen in India. The small ones, because the big ones are basically cities; definitely too big to be an outpost.
