No you are not stupid, this tutorial is not easy and straigt forward like the rest of the tutorials , just practise a lot with the smudging and the result will be stunning. Your current signature looks awesome!

If you use the smudge tool you will create a blurry and blending effect on render and background. I really like the smudge tool, I use it a lot!
You could decrease the opacity on your smudge layers. The smudge layers does not have to be clear visible, they need to blend in with the background
