Description
It was dusty in the cave under Pride Rock, and the sun seemed to avoid the skylight overhead. Kula hadn’t smelled mustier air in her life—but she couldn’t deny that she was glad Scar had told her about the place. Though it isolated her from the pride, it was completely safe from the hyenas who frightened her, none of whom knew of the cave. Water bubbled up from an underground spring, the most she had seen in a very long time. In other circumstances, Kula would have been a very happy new mother. But, as it stood....

“Is he everything you hoped for?”

Her icy delivery didn’t faze Scar, who crouched close to the ground, nose-to-nose with her newborn son. The cub was born on schedule, and at a surprisingly high weight for how little Kula had been able to eat. He did his best to pull himself around on his wobbly legs, trying to lift his head and sniff about for milk.

“Charming,” Scar muttered, standing up, “Charming. He’s perfectly healthy, as far as you can tell?”

“Yes, perfectly.”

“No birth defects? He’s been eating well, breathing well?”

“Yes, your majesty, he’s much stronger than your litter was.”

Scar just smiled in the face of the insult, to Kula’s displeasure.

“I’m glad to hear it,” said Scar, “Congratulations, Kula, he’ll make a fine heir to the throne. We can present him to the kingdom when his eyes open.”

Scar looked back down at the cub, chuckling and running a paw gently over his head.

“Do you hear that? Once you’re big and strong, you’re going to be king!” he cooed. He turned back to Kula, adding; “Neither of you will leave this cave until he’s ready for his presentation. Someone will bring you food.”

Scar turned to leave, taking in the old, gray walls as he did.

“I think I’ll ask Zira to move our litter down here,” he said to himself, “It’ll be good for her to have privacy, not to mention a wet nurse.”

Kula couldn’t help but recoil at the idea of suckling Scar and Zira’s spawn, but she held back any protests. If the queen was still lactating, they didn’t need Kula around to care for her newborn—it was better if she kept her head down even now, if she wanted to stay in his life. She put her paw around her son, moving him back to her side, as Scar headed for the tunnel out of the den.

“His name is Ni,” she said quickly, before the king could disappear, “After, um... after his father.”

Scar paused. He looked over his shoulder at Kula, who met his gaze nervously.

“No it isn’t,” Scar said, “Zira and I already discussed that—his name is Kovu.” He began walking again, adding; “After his father.”

I couldn’t help myself, I like Scar-meeting-Kovu stories XP = Of course, Kovu canonically doesn’t consider Scar his father—but I like to think that Scar considered him his son (not that you’d really want Scar to think of you as family ).
