King Nunka and Queen Bianca, leaders of a far away pride—so far away that they’re completely unknown to the Pridelanders. Their monarchy is an ancient one; strong, respected, pure... very pure, to the point that they won’t risk mixing their noble blood with that of other lions.

This tradition of keeping the monarchy genetically isolated inevitably brought the pride trouble—though they’d been lucky when it came to physical defects, madness had been common for generations, and fertility problems had begun to crop up. Much of the royal family has proved unable to bring litters to term, and they’ve had more than a few heirs that died in their cubhood. Though Bianca had had no trouble carrying cubs, she was noticeably mentally unstable. Nunka had escaped most defects, aside from general physical weakness—however, though he may not have been insane, he was still cruel. Brought up to believe he was superior to all other lions, he had no trouble throwing his weight around and treating his subjects harshly.

Eventually, Nunka would be overthrown by a rogue male who went only by ‘Tanglemane’, and was chased out of the pride. He had put up a good fight, but few of the lionesses were interested in backing him, and the rogue was stronger and healthier. Following his banishment, he was accompanied by the ever-loyal Bianca, pregnant with their newest cub.

If they wanted to keep living the life that their birthright granted them, the couple would have to find a new kingdom to rule. They trekked for years across territories, first just the two of them and then with their growing daughter, before Nunka and Bianca would stumble upon a new ally; a venomous serpent named Nyoka, who they would find (after a rough introduction in which she attacked the pair, leaving both scarred and Bianca blind in one eye) had plans for power as grand as they did, and knew how to achieve it...
