Description

“Hurry up, Ed!” Banzai growled impatiently. “We’re almost to the border!”

The wildebeest carcass lightly scraped along the ground as the hyena brothers dragged it towards their territory, one carrying it by the throat, the other by the back leg. A kill like this was quite the prize. Normally they’d be eager to dig into it immediately, but they were on enemy territory, and it was dangerous to stay long.

Besides, they hadn’t caught it for themselves. They had just joined their new clan a couple of months prior and were interested in gaining the favor of the matriarch, if for nothing else than to not be dead last in the pecking order for much longer. This wildebeest would make the perfect offering to Shenzi.

Banzai glanced back at his brother. Ed had a firm grip on the dead animal’s thigh as he trotted behind, his ears were still red from the relatively fresh tear wounds. They’d attempted a hunt like this a few days ago, but were caught and run off by one of the lion princes. Ed didn’t go unscathed.

Banzai was too busy watching his brother when he lost his footing. The carcass slipped from his jaws as he tumbled over something lying in the tall grass.

“What the heck was th—” Banzai exclaimed as he rubbed his head, only to freeze when he saw the thing he tripped over sit up and glare down at him.

“Poaching again, I see.” The lion stated in a flat tone.

“Uuuuuuh….” Banzai cowered under the lion’s gaze, racking his brain trying to figure out what he should do next. He recognized this lion as one of the princes, though thankfully it wasn’t the big one that attacked them the other day, but the younger, scrawnier one.

“My father would be quite upset to know that a couple of hyenas managed to steal food right from under his nose…” The prince muttered as he stood to his full height.

Banzai readied himself for a fight. They were so close to the border, and this lion looked like he could be taken down a lot easier than his brother. In fact, the prince was already injured. He’d been gazing at Banzai through one eye this whole time. The other was closed, covered in dried blood from a deep, fresh gash, with scratches and scrapes littering the rest of his body.

“….Well, I suppose I should get out of your way, then.” The lion suddenly turned his gaze away and sauntered off.

Banzai stared after him in shock. He glanced at Ed, who’d evidently been cowering behind their kill with his paws covering his head. Great to know you had my back there, Ed. He thought sarcastically, before turning his attention back to the prince.

“Hey, uh… aren’t you gonna, like, chase us off or something?” Banzai stammered awkwardly. He probably shouldn’t be questioning their luck, but curiosity got the better of him.

The prince stopped and sat back down, licking his paw and swiping it over his injured e
ye with a wince. “I couldn’t care less what you do. I’ve no reason to continue kowtowing to my father by doing his job for him.”

“Oh, ‘cause, I mean….” Banzai scratched his head. “Your brother would have—”

The prince swung around. “I’m not my brother!” He snarled.

“Woah! Okay, okay!” Banzai jumped back. “I get it; family drama… Wouldn’t have anything to do with that nasty shiner, would it?”

The prince scowled. “What do you think?”

Banzai saw movement out of the corner of his eye and glanced over to see Ed slowly moving towards the prince. “Ed, what are you doing?” He hissed.

The lion pulled away slightly as Ed got close, then stared back puzzled as Ed began pointing at his ears and giggling incoherently.

“Er, what’s wrong with this one?” The prince asked awkwardly.

Banzai rolled his eyes. “He’s showing you what your brother did to him. He’s like, trying to empathize with you, or whatever…”

The prince’s expression softened. “I see…” He muttered thoughtfully. “I suppose Mufasa has made both of our lives quite miserable.” He grimaced.

“So…” Banzai spoke, still wary. “You’re really just gonna let us go?”

The prince gave a sly smile. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” He stated. “I think I can turn a ‘blind eye’ to a little thievery for a friend.” He flicked his paw towards his face to emphasize the pun.

Ed let out a cackle, and Banzai couldn’t help but laugh as well. “Ha ha—Hey, nice one, man! You’re alright.” He caught his breath before continuing. “I’m Banzai, by the way, and this is my brother Ed.”

“Prince Askari” The lion replied.

“Ha, you sure you don’t mean ‘Prince Scar’?” Banzai quipped, trying to match the lion’s banter.

Askari looked offended at first, but his expression quickly morphed into a thoughtful one. “Hmph. Well, my given name no longer suites me.” He muttered bitterly.

“Heh, it was just a joke, man.” Banzai chuckled awkwardly. “But, I mean, “Scar” sounds pretty badass, so if that’s what you’d rather be called…” He trailed off as he turned back towards the wildebeest. “Come on, Ed. I’d like to get this back to Shenzi today.”

Ed stared up at the prince and waved at him, a big goofy smile on his face, before bouncing back over to his brother and grabbing the carcass by the rump again.

“Hey, Scar!” Banzai glanced back at the lion one last time. “We really owe you one!”

The prince simply hummed in response as he watched the pair haul their kill over the border, feeling a little less alone than he had moments before.
