Get your shoes, you’re going out! You have no time to lose, it’s your chance to be!
Hello! It’s me PeridottoPuffu, and I’m back with another review for Toon June! This time, I’ll be doing Go! Go! Hypergrind!
This is another game I’ve been wanting to play for a while, both because I really like it’s toony aesthetic, and also because I took one look at the wolf on the cover and instantly knew I would need to play it eventually :3 And so, here’s my review of Go! Go! Hypergrind!
First up, we have the plot! Due to the decrease of traditional 2D animation and the rise of computer generated 3D animation in cartoons in the real world, Spumco (aka the company that made Ren and Stimpy, a show I haven't really seen much of) instead decides to film a cartoon directly in the toon world about extreme skateboarding called Hypergrind, and they hold a tournament for a group of aspiring skaters and actors to determine the show’s star. I think this game’s plot is pretty good, and I really like this game’s cast of characters (my favorite of course being Decker :3) and how they each have their own scenes and reasons for taking part in the tournament.
Next up, we have the gameplay! This is a skating game where you skate around levels and perform sick gnarly tricks and interact with objects to gain various toon effects called appeals. Activating appeals adds to the points you get when doing tricks, and you can also chain appeals together to get even more points and extend the amount of time they last for. The main story mode of the game has you going through all eight stages in the game and doing a set of matches for each of them, and you get points based on how well you do in each match that adds up to an overall total on the scoreboard, and the goal is to be in first place by the end. The types of matches you’ll do include appeal matches where you try to get as many points as possible, linking matches where you try to get the most points from a single link of appeals, simon says where you have to find and get as many specific appeals as possible, battles where appeals give you an attack to hit another character with, races where you need to find three different colored medals that randomly show up from appeals and reach a goal (which are my personal least favorite of them because they’re the most RNG dependant), and minigames where you have to interact with specific objects as many times as possible. There are also various purchasable boards and equipable gears that have different stats, and there’s also a single session mode with hidden missions to complete to unlock gallery art as well as a 2P versus mode. This game also has a list of cheat codes that you can use to unlock everything, but I personally didn’t use any of them and unlocked everything I did including both Vert and Kevin fully legit, so… that’s cool. Overall, I think this game’s gameplay and setup are really good, and while I wasn’t able to beat the game on my first attempt of it and had to reset early on in some of my following attempts to get as good a start as I could, I had a lot of fun learning the game’s mechanics and using what I learned to beat it a couple times. I also think that the amount of characters, unlockables, and difficulties also adds a lot to the game’s replayability, and I can see myself having fun playing it again in the future.
Next, we have the visuals, and this game looks really good! I really like this game’s cartoony art style, and I think all the characters, stages, and cutscenes look pretty good.
Finally, we have the music and voice acting, and they’re really good too! I really like this game’s entire soundtrack, with my favorite songs in the game being the main theme/Western Film’s theme “Jam Jam Hype!?”, Toon City’s theme “Rattle Toy”, and the end credits theme “Creature”, and the voice acting is pretty solid too.
And that’s it for my review of Go! Go! Hypergrind! I think this game is fantastic and had a great time playing it, so if you’re interested in checking it out and have the chance to do so (since this game is pretty expensive and hard to come by these days and was also only released in America), I highly recommend it.
This has been PeridottoPuffu, and I pledge…
That I will always regrow my head when it gets chopped off!
That I will not cringe in pain when my body is punctured!
That I will not cry like a sissy when I am flattened into a pancake!
That I will boldly leap into flames!
That I will eagerly dive into icy-cold water!
That I won’t act like a square, even when I’ve been squished into a cube!
That I will live up to the Spumco name, the very best creators of cartoons!
That the word “impossible” does not exist to me…
…because in the toon world, the laws of physics do not apply!
And lastly, I pledge that I will entertain the kids of the real world to the best of my ability!
