When I was in Berlin, I was staying with a host family and my host mom was originally from Freiburg. When I showed her this picture, she told me about the huge scandal it was when the city gave permission for a McDonald's to move in to the shop space under the gate. Think about it: this beautiful, old Renaissance facade and then a McDonald's sign; I can understand why the people were angry.
