Description The 2000 presidential election was less chaotic than the 1996 election, but it was no less unusual. Congress was a disorganized mess with no political parties or caucuses, and very little was getting passed. Perot, while initially wanting to keep his federal power to a minimum after President Bush’s dictatorial policies and actions, was forced to pass multiple executive orders that made him less popular among the people. Perot still ran alongside his Vice President and former-rival Edwin Edwards, and he faced less opposition than he did in the 1996 election. His main opponent was former Senator John McCain. McCain had picked Harry Reid as his running mate, who was another former Senator. Kennedy criticized Perot on his executive orders, saying that he was “no better than Bush”, while Perot questioned if Ted Kennedy could carry out the duties of the President with his old age. The country still lacked proper voting infrastructure, so the vote counting took over a month to complete, but on December 12th 2000 it was announced that Perot had narrowly won re-election. This election was seen as the final blow to the pre-war political establishment, as new candidates dominated congress.
