I'm guessing this photo has something historically important to it. I wanna say that it has something to do with the American Civil War as the starting date says 1861 which was the start of the war. But what's tripping me up is the end date being 1885 as that's 20 whole years after the Civil War had ended. On top of that, the men in the photo look pretty young, so I'm not sure if they have actually anything to do with the giant memorial. Think you can help clear this help?

Civil War artillery had red shoulder epaulets and red pant stripes (yellow for cavalry, light blue for infantry), which is not shown here, Β these fellows look ca. 1917-18. You could look up Ohio artillery online for the legend, could just be the years that unit was in service.

as far as I can determine this picture was taken in the early years of the 20th century...The caption on the back only indicates that the men present are"children and grandchildren"of men who were involved with Goodspeed's battery...as for the latter date my guess would be that it indicates the year the monument was dedicated...many civil war markers were erected years after the war itself had ended
