He was a Hollywood character actor in films like"The Killers", and played Marshall Matt Dillon on the radio, though he was not exactly physically suitable for the TV show, where the stalwart lawman was played for 20 years by James Arness. Conrad directed a lot of TV shows in the 1960s, as well as a few movies like the underrated "My blood ran cold" with Troy Donahue and Joey Heatherton. He is most famous for his portrayal of fat Frank Cannon, the PI in a highly successful TV series of the 1970s, an era when detectives with distinctive physical characteristics - bald (Kojak), scruffy (Columbo), out of time cowboy (McCloud) etc were very popular.
