Diana got some help getting Eld started under saddle; she prefers to start young horses on a lunge first without the reigns, as she doesn't want the horse to get used to the bridle being an annoying presence and to eliminate rider error in handling the reigns, especially if the horse does spook. Eld was a real gentleman, and Diana's slow approach definitely paid off with him. While at first he was a bit tense with the added weight on his back, he eventually relaxed and even lowered his head as he had come to understand is expected of him on the lunge line.

The indoor arena was the venue for this step, as it provided a safe, closed off space and very little distractions for the young stallion. The goal wasn't yet to get the stallion in a sporty frame, so he got to trot around lazily while he got used to the weight and the leg aids on the long line.
