Description
Given this year’s Beach Day themed subject, Roxanne in Hello Aloha , I wanted to pay homage not only in name to the original “Hello Aloha ” short staring Goofy, but also by honoring the original art style of the 1952 short. The original background art for the cartoon was done in water colors by Disney background artist, Art Riley – also known for his work for Disney’s The Jungle Book, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, among other.

The perfect scene I chose to replicate from the short appears at the 3:45 minute mark. Unfortunately, I would have loved to simply use the original as a full homage, but unfortunately there are no high-resolution copies of the scene available online and I’ve only one been able to find original artwork from one other scene . But that also gave a lot of creative freedom modify what I was able to work with using a combination of AI tools (Citrus) and Photoshop techniques to recreate the piece at a MUCH higher resolution quality.

I also wanted to modify the art from the more washed palate of the original short to reflect the more vibrant background colors from “A Goofy Movie ” and “Goof Troop ”. I feel like the end result came out quite well. Overall, I can only really take 25% credit for the final work given so much of Riley’s beautiful style is present throughout. I hope it does a good job paying tribute to his work and the history of the “Goof” legacy.
