Reference sheet for my character Kodiak's coyote form. Drawing characters with multiple forms is fun as it allows me to change things up every now and then. However, figuring out markings is a challenge as I like to keep the markings the same(ish) between forms. What looks good for a dragon design will not necessary look good as a design for a canine. So the challenge lies in adapting the design to fit the species, while also making the character look recognizable. Luckily, Kodiak's current design was partly based on an old design for his coyote form, so it ended up looking pretty decent when adapting the new design to this form.
