After Nelly's father kills her, her oldest ancestor, Helios, is not content with the ending of his line and through a deal with Thanatos, the god of death, has her resurrected as a psychopomp, a being that guides souls to the afterlife.

When she is resurrected, Nelly can't remember what transpired or her past life for months until small bits an sources come back. By then, she has had new experiences and doesn't connect with her past identity, choosing the name Naamah for herself to create a clear distinction between her mortal life and her new immortal one.
