Personality: Matt is boisterous, hot-blooded and slightly temperamental. He loves to enter martial arts tournaments and get the chance to test his skills. Despite his hot-blooded nature, he is usually able to keep a level head both in and out of battle. He spends his leisure time at Hibachi Grills and other places where they serve Japanese cuisine. He used to be a football fan, but has since lost his liking for it.

When training with his students in karate, he has a habit of being a bit too hard on them. He has high expectations of them, but very few actually meet them. Despite this, he has never given up on any them and continues to train them.

Background story:

Matt’s high school days were truly awful. Not because he was always stressed or because he had low grades, but because he used to be a bully. It started in his sophomore year when he got accepted into the football team; the other players were jocks who loved to torment other students, and Matt wasn’t able to resist their toxic influence. He began to bully others with his teammates and even began to enjoy it, especially with his coach and principal working together to make sure that the football team never got in trouble. Their favorite insults were homophobic slurs, much to Matt’s sister, Alexis’s aggravation.

When his parents kicked Alexis out, she came to stay with him and revealed that she was gay. Realizing how much he had hurt her, and that he couldn’t continue to hang out with the football crowd, he dropped out of the team and took up karate instead. After graduating high school, (and with his sports scholarship in flames) he got a job at a sushi bar to support Alexis. He also made it his personal mission to apologize to the people he bullied in high school. Some people (like Zoey’s friend, Arin) for gave him, others didn’t, and he was able to accept it. Either way, he hasn’t stopped trying to be a better person.

Likes: Karate, Japanese cuisine, high-protein foods, sports, grapes, action anime/games, military/courtroom drama movies, and foreign horror films.

Dislikes: Censoring anime, high school bullies, overly-cutesy anime, iced coffee, romance dramas, heights, and orange soda.
