Description Took this shot off the bow of the Raddison Diamond cruise ship in the Adraitic Sea (east of Italy). It was 1:00 AM and there was lightning dancing all around the ship. I took over 100 shots and got this one and one other decent capture. The wind was probabally a steady 30 knots (including boat speed) and the glare is one spec of rain since it was sprinkling.

I am very happy with this shot and LOVE the details of the reflection in the sea.

Nice shot of course. I see lightning hit the Hudson river like that but wouldn't have the patience or know how to capture it.

Thank you EVERYONE for the kind remarks. This shot realy is one of my favorites. I know a lot of you said you find lightning capture difficult so let me shed a light to how I captured this pic:

The #1 thing I had going for this picture is that we were in the middle of the sea in COMPLETE darkness with the lightning dancing all around.
Also since there were so many bolts (hundreds over the span of this shoot) it made it much more plausible for a good capture.
I first set the camera to 5 second exposure, f4 (my sharpest apature), and manual focus infinity.
I aimed the camera in an area of anticipated lightning strike and took frame, if there was no lightning (about 111 shots out of 129 had NO lightning) the frame would be completely dark since NO ambient lighting.
Also as soon as EVERY frame was completed I would take another, over and over in sucession.
When I would capture lightning it was only for a brief moment in the capture, so the only light the camera would catch was from the lightning (thus making it not necessary for stillness of the camera for the whole frame, just when the lightning was present, making it possible to shoot on a moving ship)
I also found that depending on how bright the bolt was sometimes I needed a faster shutter, maybe 2 seconds, to obtain the same brightness in final photo.

I know some of this is very elementary in photography, but to explain to others how this shot was accomplished.

cant do long exposure off a cruise ship, snapping has got to be hard.

It's so crisp and clear. If it weren't for that smudgy light purple blob, it would be perfect, but it's not your fault. Great job.
