On a hot sunny afternoon, the temperature just started cooling as a breeze from the east glided along the shoreline. This was perfect for a routine afternoon nap for Sherbet after a grueling day of work. Before he could claim his rest as a reward, Sherbet had one more task to finish once and for all.

Thump! Thump! Thump! “There. Perfect,” Sherbet gloated after he hammered the sign nice and secure between the rocks of the rocky wall. With this sign, his woes, or at least one of his woes, would soon come to an end. No longer did he have to worry about the popping, the giggles of children, the disruptions between naptime by the horrid things popping on his nose, and not even the sight of them! This mere wooden sign was going to make sure of that.

Sherbet stared up at the sky, still having those burdened thoughts of making more signs if needed. To even get a wood block, he had to go to the disgusting place that was the forest and look for fallen logs along the filthy floor. All the washing and carving of the wood left him with wrinkly fingers and splinters for days. But what is a sign without words or images on it? To get that, he haggled and argued for hours with a rip-off merchant in the city just to get the ink! Then he had to travel all the way to the other side of the city’s market place to get the brush, which much to his dismay was sold out and wasn’t restocked for a week.

During all of this time, babs coming over to his beach for some sort of “getaway” brought those annoyances, those icky things, those… bubbles. It kept him up for weeks since he hadn’t been able to get his proper five naps per day. Those families wondered why Sherbet had to put them in their place. They were way out of line!

This wasn’t going to be an issue anymore however, oh no. He managed to crack down on splashing, singing, humming, running, throwing beach balls all over the place, swimming, and anything else that caused him much grief within his sight. Bubbles were just the one thing, that one thing, people wouldn’t give up despite Sherbet’s shouting and snarling. How dare they push him to this point of making written rules, but if that’s what was going to change their ways, Sherbet had to take up the responsibility.

After all that hard work of making and sticking the sign up where suitable, Sherbet yawned a ferocious yawn, and stretched into a comfortable position for his well deserved nap. The sun slowly passed over his head, letting its rays rest on his back. The gentle breeze continued to blow from the east against his fur. The simultaneous warmth and coolness relaxed all his tense muscles, worries, and pains. As time seemed to slow down, his eyelids grew heavier and heavier until he was unable to keep them open and surrendered to sleep.

Pop. Perhaps it was just a dream slowly taking over his reality that made that sound. Pop. Pop! It was growing slightly louder. Pop! Pop, pip, pop! POP! A big, gooey bubble hit the tip of Sherbet’s nose, throwing him out of his daze. Before he could question if it was really a nightmare, he heard the crushing of the sand and giggles riding along the wind. Not too far away was a young bab child skipping along the sand, spreading bubbles everywhere right before Sherbet’s eyes. And right before the sign. “HEY! You little brat, can’t you read the sign?” Sherbet barked at the little yellow bab.
