Description
This is a 5 part pocket etch a sketch compilation of the famous sculpture known as the laocoon. It was an assignment for my Art History 2 class to make your own artistic interpretation of this sculpture, and our teacher didn't want us to just redraw it, so I decided that I was going to do it in 5 portions, each with a different style of shading and rendering. My personal favorite is the 8bit version, which I plan on using in future work.
The piece took roughly 5 hours, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. This is the first assignment I have been able to do in etch a sketch at my art college, so I was totally on board with it
The picture of the laocoon (which I used for reference) is on the upper right, so that you can get a better idea of what I was going for.
EDIT: 2-19-11 Thank you so kindly for the Daily Deviation! I am truly honored!

Aw thank you so much!
Also, I have a comment that I saved from a long while ago, I am still planning on taking photos of my Sailor Moon room to show you
I regretfully have the bulk of my collectibles back in Michigan (I live in an apartment in Chicago for school) but I still have posters and wall scrolls galore!
Also, Chinatown is an amazing resource for knockoff Sailor Moon collectibles. They're cheaply made, but for the most part adorable.

No worries
Oh cool!! I honestly can't wait to see it! Progress is slow with my SM-themed appartment but I'll be sure to link you once its done ^^
hehe Chinatown is epic. It is unfortunate though that there aren't as many SM finds as back in the early 2000s I miss those days...

you and I both! Back then I was too young though, and didn't have the opportunity to nab the plethora of wonderful goods. I was living off an allowance then!

If I ballparked it I would say it took about an hour per piece, so 5 hours?

I remember looking at this piece in one of my arts classes. Or was it humanities?
Either way, I loved the piece then and really admire/love the way you interpreted the sculpture. This is a bloody awesome interpretation - its fun, its surprising, and it looks challenging. Thank you very much for sharing!

amazing work, cant understand how it is possible?
How do you have disconnected lines? I thought all etch-a-sketch is one continuous lines, but there are loads of loose ends. Has etch-a-sketch changed since I was a kid?

pikajane In reply to AngelCrusher [2011-02-20 00:34:16 +0000 UTC]
there are no disconnected lines in these 5 pieces. Where do you see where the lines appear to be disconnected? I will gladly show you where they are

AngelCrusher In reply to pikajane [2011-02-20 01:18:25 +0000 UTC]
Maybe its the picture quality, but in the face, with the beard there seems to be some loose lines, and most of th outlines in the top left panel and the bottom left some of the shading lines dont look connected either. Again, it could be the zoom on the picture isnt enough, just looks odd.

pikajane In reply to AngelCrusher [2011-02-20 07:19:04 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I can explain that. Basically, when you trace over a line sometimes on an etch a sketch, the stylus moves the powder around, and it will bunch up at the end of a line, causing a tiny break. But it is all connected, it just depends on how I went over the line. If you try it out on an etch a sketch you can pretty much replicate the same thing.

AngelCrusher In reply to pikajane [2011-02-20 22:59:30 +0000 UTC]
ah, that explains it then.
I never really tried anything as detailed and never really traced back over lines so I didnt know about it. Gotta say its very impressive work.

Mollinda In reply to AngelCrusher [2011-02-19 21:18:18 +0000 UTC]
You have to double back on your lines I think
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AngelCrusher In reply to Mollinda [2011-02-20 00:29:18 +0000 UTC]
Ah yes...that makes sense.
But some pieces...like in the face with the beard, lines are just floating around with no connections, like they have been drawn seperate. Doubling up would explain a dead end, but floating lines? Its witchcraft! ^_^

Dude that is SO RAD! sorry i had to say that that was the first thing that popped into my mind. XD secondly its is very creative. And i love how clean the lines look. Not To mention How many times you had to Shake the picture to get it right? Or atleast i am assuming. I also love that you did you other shading styles it makes the peice way more interesting and unique. Which is hard to find in let alone a drawing, but i seem to see it in something i didnt think i would see it in. Great job <3
