Description I never made any plans to leave,
Yet she made no plans to stay.
In my left hand I held a cold glass of comfort,
And a cloven cigarette.
While my right held a cold ‘brewski’;
The cheapest thing in the room besides myself.

She stayed for champagne.
I stayed for coffee wrapped in a thin,
Yet lacy veil of cream.
So as I pulled back the veil for my first kiss,
I was greeted by a weak bittnerness,
And the aroma of wilted flowers.

The Midwest marches to midnight,
And the mind rushes with empty promises;
Only one worth keeping.
Yet I can’t find one worth a notion of effort.
On this,
The night of reflection,
The events of the year rush through her head,
And the liquor clouds her liver,
And the estrogen clouds her brain.

So as the Midwest marches to midnight,
I halt in protest.
I refuse to let the coming year be like this.
Even in the first seconds there are changes:
Friends in graves,
Friends ‘of age’,
Friends in love,
And friends on drugs.

So if you can hear me Ryan,
I wish I could bring you back.
If you can hear me Sarah,
Your age is coming.
If you can hear me Erik,
Love isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.
If you can hear me Rob,
What’s left when the fog clears?

The coffee cup is empty.
The time is up,
And yet I still have questions.
Like how can some songs be less than a minute,
And others more than an hour?
I am just guessing that this what runs through the mind,
Particularly when avoid the dismal reality.
The eyes cannot censor the ugly;
The ears cannot silence the out-of-tune;
Yet the touch can make the rough smoother than silk.
So will I feel the coming year as I wish,
Or will I see and hear unclouded?
