Gordon is tasked by Black Mesa to infiltrate rival company Aperture Science under the guise as a new employee in order to spy on them. Black Mesa also hands him a clueless kid they obtained from an orphanage for Gordon to take care of while also helping with the cover story because Aperture Science—for no nefarious reason in particular—is more likely to hire people with children. They even offer schooling and housing (all on Aperture grounds of course).

Benrey is a security guard at Aperture Science. And also secretly an alien who escaped from Black Mesa years ago by hijacking the life/identity of a human. He needs to find someone to room with after his Aperture-issued apartment “mysteriously” burned down a little bit maybe. So they see cute newbie Gordon and are like “yo can i move in.” And Gordon’s like “yeah sure” because he thinks Benry’s an idiot and it would be great for his cover. Who’s going to suspect the guy living with the security guard of being a spy? He also figures it’ll be easy to get Benrey to blab about Aperture secrets Look, Benrey did not make the greatest first impression when they initially met ok.

Joshua, 7 years old—AKA the “clueless” kid”—isn’t actually clueless because he’s secretly a mind-reading telepath who ran away from some OTHER morally dubious organization (may or may not be the SCP Foundation idk) and has been looking for a home ever since. He knows both Gordon and Benrey’s secrets but neither of them have figured out Joshie’s secret yet.
