Description
South Park’s “You’re Getting Old”/“Ass Burgers” two-parter is a somber portrayal of the reality in growing up. When the first part initially aired, the series went on a long break that felt like Trey Parker and Matt Stone were done with their show. Except not really. The second part reset most of the first’s downer ending, but the context of the episode makes it a downer ending anyway, essentially deconstructing the Status Quo is God trope. The episodes’ plot is partly based on the creators’ real aging, with Stan’s existential crisis upon turning 10 (and Randy’s promotion to main character).Matt Stone, the voice of Kyle Broflovski and many others, shares his birthday with Stevie Nicks, the songwriter to the ending song of “You’re Getting Old”, “Landslide”. Nicks was lampooned in an earlier episode, “Osama bin Laden Has Farty Pants”, being compared to a goat. She was a good sport about it, since she’s a fan of the show. She gave them permission to use her song just before airing, and it was done in a genuinely poignant way. In her own life, Nicks is content with her decision to pursue musical arts over starting a family, though sadly regretting never being able to find a longtime partner. In a way, “Landslide” applies to her just as much as Parker, Stone, and Stan.
Happy Birthday, Matt Stone and Stevie Nicks.
South Park belongs to Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Comedy Central.
