According to myth a wyvern (a type of dragon) and a serket (giant scorpion) that shatter an island nation into thousands of pieces (the Cyclades Islands) across the sea only to become consumed by the great sea itself creating both the first leviathan and kraken. They then became forced to guard the islands and their inhabitants from beneath the waves.
