Description
Na'reidhimh is perhaps the oldest magical weapon ever created by mortals. Not much is known about its original creator or indeed the weapon itself. What is known, at least by those who wield it, is that the weapon possesses a sentience with a keen will and a strong sense of honor. The only way to wield Na'reidhimh in any capacity is to swear an oath to the blade. While the exact contents of the oath may vary depending on the hopeful wielder, it must always contain a promise to never standby when injustice is done and to never needlessly draw the blade when either diplomacy or other, less violent, options exist. The power granted to anyone successfully bound to The Oathbinder is significant. Firstly, as with all bound weapons, Na'reidhimh will appear nigh weightless and perfectly balanced to its wielder. The edge will be ever sharp and always reach its foe. Additionally, the weapon may act of it's will. This goes beyond simply guiding the wielder's arm in combat as Na'reidhimh may even wield itself, as if being swung by an invisible hand. The speed at witch the sword can move when acting on its own is incredible, even capable of breaking the sound barrier. Finally, the sword is capable of sharing its senses with it's wielder. The blade has perfect, real time perception within a radius of 10 meters even able to detect people or items hidden by magic. Beyond this range its perception falls off slowly, reducing in accuracy and speed for a kilometer. This range is also the maximum range at which the Na'reidhimh may sense its wielder. If the two are separated by a greater distance than this then the weapon will enter a hibernation state, usually hovering blade down as it waits for its wielder. No individual will be able to move it from this spot and any who attempt too zealously may find themselves a victim Na'reidhimh keen edge. The only way the blade can be passed on to a new wielder is either with the death of its current partner or if they break their oath.
Na'reidhimh has been held by many warriors throughout history and all attempts to bind the weapon as an heirloom or birthright have failed thus far. Even though sometimes centuries pass between wielders,Β Na'reidhimh is eternally it's own arbiter.Β
