If you want to submit literature on DeviantArt, you have two choices:
(1) Submitting it directly on the dA website as text
(2) Submitting as a .pdf (I tried submitting with a Word doc and it didn't work like it should).
After these two tutorials, I've also created a tutorial how to use Sta.sh Storage feature to edit a work. You can find the link for it in the description (or just go to the next tutorial)
*Side Note for any deviant who's been here for years: DA's latest update prevents veteran deviants (long-time usesrs) from submitting text like we used to a few years ago; however, you can edit older deviations' text the old way by clicking on the pencil icon and then clicking on the pencil icon in the new window and then selecting "edit text" and edit in the text box like you're used to (with all the html code at the bottom to guide you through formatting).
Once you finish, click "Preview" to see if the code worked, or "OK" to submit it, then click the "Update" button at the bottom and you're done.
Okay, side-note over--back to the tutorial:
If you choose to submit it directly onto dA, it’s pretty straight-forward and simple.(I know this looks like a lot of steps, but I had to break them down this way to make them easier to read and understand):
- Type your text directly into this box, or you can type up the chapters on Word or some other word processor (like WordPad, Pages, LibreOffice) and copy-and-pasted the text;
- Note: While it's nice to be able to type right into this text box, I don't recommend it unless you're writing something quick and short.
I can't tell you how many times either my internet connection failed me or DeviantArt was unable to save everything I had typed before I could click on Submit...and I'm not alone. I've had several friends complain about what they wrote getting lost before they clicked Submit and got the message that the website failed to submit their deviations . . . after hours of typing T_T.
So I strongly recommend typing it up somewhere else and copy-and-pasting.
Fortunately, DeviantArt heard all of us veteran Deviants regarding this issue and programmed in a fail-safe of sorts: If you're worried about your internet connection, you can click the "Submit" button and then go back and edit later. DA will also warn you if you accidentally click away from your deviation before clicking on that "Submit" button (think if it as the "save" button for DeviantArt's draft window).
If this happens (accidentally clicking away before saving/hitting submit), you have to intentionally hit the "Discard" button to lose your work. Otherwise, you can hit "Cancel" and go back to drafting on DeviantArt. It's a feature that was a long time coming and will save you hours of working online. (thank you, dA!)
- (1) Indicate whether the submission "Contains Mature Content". This you'll find directly below a thumbnail of the text you just entered;
- (2) Click on and read the Submission Policy link and then click on and read the Terms of Service, Premium Content Terms of Service, and Print Submissions Agreement links. Note: you only have to do this once unless dA updates these terms.
- (3) Then check the two boxes at the bottom that read, “I have read and agree to the Submission Policy and/or contest rules if applicable” and “I have read and agree to the Terms of Service and to the Premium Content Terms of Service, and to the Print Submissions Agreement, if applicable.”
- You have the option of tweaking your title here. Just click in the box and change it.
- To add a description, click where DA has written "Introduce your deviation. Tell the backstory, add some intriguing accompanying text, or simply give deviants extra information you'd like them to know." DA’s text will disappear and your text will start.
- (1) If you use someone else's art, do your utmost to contact that person and get permission...sometimes this isn't always possible if you just grab art from Google Images or similar, but still do your best to get permission! No one likes their art being used without permission. It's the same as art theft to them (it feels the same as art theft even if you post a link back to their art; just get permission. It'll build a great relationship with that artist and all of that artist's friends).
- (2) Use your own art/photos if you can or commission someone else to do it for you. You'll have more pride in the work and you'll also not have to go through the hassle of getting permission.
- (3) Pick artwork that has some connection or association with the content of your writing. Nothing is more irritating or confusing to click on an image of a character and have that character never mentioned once, or for example, to click on a rose and the poem is about slugs. Remember, preview pics are like visual descriptions, so mismatched picture will function the same as if you put gibberish in the description space.
- (4) Finally, I've found that literature that has full-color, well-drawn preview pics seem to get more clicks than poorly drawn/black & white pics or no preview pic at all.
- If you want to “Schedule” your submission time, you’ll need to be come a CORE member to do so, which requires a fee…unless you’re going to be on DA a lot or you plan on using it for commissions or your career, it's probably not something you want to do
- You also have the option of saving your work and going back to edit later, but only select this option if you're not ready to submit the piece yet. You take this option by clicking any of the links at the top or starting another submission. dA will automatically save your work and put it in Sta.sh.
Note: saving to Sta.sh will only work if you've hit the first "Submit" in Step #3. Otherwise, dA will ask you if you're sure you want to discard your work, and trust me, you don't want to do that. Once your deviation is automatically saved in Sta.sh (think of it as dA's cloud), you can only retrieve and/or edit, and submit your saved work through Sta.sh Storage.
Submitting a .pdf is similar. I chose this one specifically b/c it keeps all my original formatting whereas copy-and-pasting does not (interesting fact: copy-and-pasting some basic formatting like hard returns/enter spaces but keeps fancy formatting like bold, underling and italics; weird, I know but there it is).
The main downside to selecting this option is that some mobile devices will not be able to view your work (you'll have to provide them with a hyperlink to FFN or a duplicate that was submitted via the "Literature" option), or they’ll have to click on another screen to preview the file or you’ll have to tell them to go a desktop/laptop to read it, and with the number of mobile phone users out there, you may want to consider the first option over this one:
- In order to drag and drop, you’ll need to “restore down” or tile your windows (it looks like two windows next to each other in a stack) and then drag the icon for your pdf over to the space indicated. Once you drop it, you’ll see a green progress bar start; wait for it to finish before you do anything else. Because restoring down your windows can be a hassle, I prefer to select the Choose a File to Upload” option
- If you select “Choose a File to Upload”, it will access your computer files, find your file, and open it. When you upload the pdf, a green progress bar will appear; wait for it to finish before you do anything else.
Are you using a mobile browser (phone) or DeviantArt's phone app? Well, this tutorial cannot help you. Go to the description for the link to both of my phone submission tutorials--on the DA app and on your phone's browser (I'm not adding it here; this tutorial is already too long as it is).
Also, please note: I've been able to include html or hyperlinks in my test literature but doing so sometimes causes issues, like not saving the literature or dA's bot converting it to a Journal instead of a Literature deviation. Your most effective and easiest way to include links for your readers to click on is to put them in the description of the work.
This tutorial should make it easy to submit literature if you follow it precisely. You shouldn't have issues or end up having your work go to Sta.sh Storage. The only way for that to happen is if you didn't click on the "Submit Now" button at the end of the process (the second submit request). If that happens, dA automatically (and thankfully) saves your deviation to Sta.sh Storage, just in case you didn't mean to leave before clicking Submit Now.
Again, if you unintentionally exited before finishing the submission but after clicking Submit (the first submit request), and you want to retrieve and/or edit, and submit your saved work, you must now use the Sta.sh Storage. You find this by hovering over your profile icon and clicking on Sta.sh Storage.
Below in the description is a link to a tutorial on how to use Sta.sh and how to submit via your mobile phone (I used an Android phone--Samsung Note 9--but I assume it will work similarly with an iPhone or other mobile device).
Hope this helps ^_^

Got a 404 Not Found result when I clicked on that hyperlink. I think I can't see it b/c I don't have permissions to do so. Could you note/pm me the original document?
This kinda sounds like the same problem that Toasty-Marshmallow was having; did you read our thread/conversation? My only conclusion I could reach with her
was the html code she'd put in the entry was causing dA's recognition program to not recognize it as literature. Do you have any html code you're trying to put in the submission?
Also, have you contacted dA support about this? Sometimes they can help.

I... Honestly have no clue. A friend of mine let me use some of his info, which included some pictures I copy/pasted from his original document. I'm guessing that's what caused the problem, since, when I saved them to my computer and re-uploaded them to Sta.sh, it submitted as a normal literature document.

I'll bet you had some darn html code hidden in the the pictures. It seems like html code makes the program on dA think it's not literature.

That's probably the case, I'm willing to admit. Also, thanks for the help! Much appreciated.

Hello there! I'm becoming very frustrated right now with trying to submit my text as a literature piece and I am hoping you can help me! I sincerely hope that I am simply messing something really simple and straight forward. ;_;
So I uploaded my text through "submit art" and did steps 1-7 already nearly 3 times over already. I typed everything out by hand into the "Enter Text" (while simultaneously saving everything into a word document in case of internet failure) and then clicked "ok". I went to go select a category and the only two main categories available are "My Journal" and "Journal Portal."
Did I do something wrong? I used "enter text" because I have a TON of coding stuff in it to make it look just how I want it to look. I would be more than happy to link to the stash file of it? I just will now~

If you aren't sure what to do that is just fine, I just wanted to ask in case I really am doing something wrong~ Thank you for your time!!

Sorry I didn't reply sooner; work's been a little hectic. First of all, you did select "Submit Art" for step 1, right? If so, great (and bravo for saving it to a Word document. It took 3 upload failures for me to figure out that I was only frustrating myself by trying to type it all online, even if it was just a flash fiction). If not, you'll need to do that before anything else can happen.
To see what you might be struggling with, I went to "Submit Art" and then entered some text. After I hit okay, I entered a title, checked the "Mature Tag" and then worked on selecting a category.
It's odd that you only have "My Journal" and "Journal Portal". There should be 7 selections there: Frequently Used, My Scrapbook, My Journal, DeviantArt Related, Journal Portal, Literature, Resources & Stock Images. All of these should be there. You are a Premium member so you shouldn't have any restrictions on what you can see in categories. "Literature" should be in the above category list just below "Journal Portal" (It's the 6th item on the list in the column).
If you don't see this button/link, there may be a work-around: there should be a search box above the categories column that says "Search Categories". Click in this box and enter/type the category you're looking for (i.e. "fan fiction") and a drop-down list should appear. Click on the hyperlink of the category you want and the page will populate your category/subcategories all the way to the end.
If you don't see this drop-down list, you may have a browser that doesn't support flash or your flash player may need updating. If those programs are okay, try deleting your cookies/cache and then start again (the page will go back to its default when you do this).
One last thing: make sure that you check the "Submissions Policy" and "Terms of Service" boxes, or dA won't let you submit anything. If you've done all this, you have the option of "Save and Exit", "Schedule" (only available to Premium members like you), or "Submit".
If you're still not able to find your category after trying all this, I'm afraid I can't help you (I'm frustrated b/c I can't see what's going on from your side of the internet). You'll need to talk to tech support here on dA.
As for your "Commission Status {OPEN}" submission. It's not Literature. The category it's attached to is "DeviantArt Related" (I checked). I think that "Literature" watermark/thumbnail may be just a generic thumbnail for anything that the website recognizes as typed or copy'n'pasted as opposed to attached files/art.
Hope some of this helps. Sorry if it doesn't.

First off, thank you SO much for you help!! I REALLY appreciate it~ I somehow found a way to submit it, (though not to the correct category it will work temporarily.)
Yes, so I did click submit art, and I entered all my text as well as dealt with the mature tag. Because it was only giving me the "My journal" and "Journal Portal" I messed with some different things. I went in and got rid of all of my text, (along with all the coding) and simply typed in a couple words, clicked "ok" and when I scrolled down to see all of the categories all the categories that should have been there were there! So I chose the one I (At the time) thought was right (Which it wasn't and still isn't. Whoops! Still got to fix it.) and then went back up to edit the text, therefore adding in all the text I had typed before. The categories went back to showing only "My journal" and "Journal Portal" but it would submit to the category I chose before I re-edited all of the original text back in. I have absolutely NO idea why it worked or why it is still not working properly, but for now it is as good a solution as I can find.
I am definitely going to try the option of searching for a subcategory and seeing if it find the correct category from there. Thank you again SO much for your time!! It blows my mind the amount of help you've been giving myself and others regarding these issues and I really can't thank you enough!

^^ You're quite welcome! I guess it's the teacher in me that saw the need (many of my friends were complaining about the new Sta.sh feature or not knowing how to submit literature deviations), so I decided to fill that need. It was difficult finding a way to explain how to do this in a way that was clear. I'm used to vocally telling students how to do something XD
Perhaps I can help you out with this as well. I think it might be the code that's causing the issue. What codes are you using in your deviation?
You'll have to let me know if searching for the category succeeds as a work-around to this issue. I've included it in the instructions, but I'm not sure how effective it will be to help others.

Well that is just so kind of you!! I teach violin and viola so I understand your struggle~ But you did a great job explaining it nevertheless!
You know, I went back through all of my code and I think the reason the categories aren't working might be because I am using come types of code for things like image sourcing that aren't shown as usable code~ Somehow I have broken the system? I will probably just continue to keep it how it is since it is somehow managing to work in the category it is in~
In other news I tried the work-around solution you mentioned and it did not work~ Like I said before, I think I am somehow managing to put code that should be able to be used in this type of deviation in this type of deviation. Weird stuff!!! ;_;

LOL thanks for understanding ^^
I see. I'm still curious about the code b/c I'd like to see if it performs the same way with me (my dad raised us on programming computer programs, code, and DOS, so the computer geek in me is curious). Of course, you don't have to spend any more time on this than you should have to, so it's up to you if you want to share the code we're talking about.
And yes, it's weird...which is why I wanted to know if your situation is rare or what will happen to anyone who tries to do it.

Actually I would love to share the code with you! One thing I don't know how to do (out of the MANY things I don't know how to do) is how to post code in a way that it doesn't actually work and in a way that it will appear as text and not the way it is meant to be seen as. I have no idea if that last sentence made any sense but if it did do you know how I could share the code with you without it actually "working" and instead just show the text? I have always been very curious about coding and would be thrilled to have you look at it!

Yes there is a way to show the code: you add a space between the < and the code letter, for example, for bold < b > and honestly, you don't even need to do the closing > b/c it isn't necessary to share the code information.

PoisonousTiger In reply to Toasty-Marshmallow [2015-07-17 04:48:42 +0000 UTC]
Sorry it took me so long to reply. It's finals right now and this has been my first real evening that wasn't packed with work, plus that was a lot of spaces to delete (I kid, I kid. I used the "Find and Replace" feature in Word to get rid of all of them...didn't know you could do that, huh? )
Anyway, the same thing happened to me. I only got the option for Journals. Not even "Search Categories" can bypass this. The closest thing I got to "Literature" was when I typed "script" and got a fan fiction option and when I typed "poetry", which gave me several poetry options.
My theory about this: I think dA might have some kind of bot or code recognition system that recognizes some of your html code as something that should only be in journals, not in literature or fan fiction categories. I think the poetry slips by this b/c poetry has always been the one part of creative writing that marches to its own drum (formatting, style, rhythm, and structure often don't follow any of the regular writing rules). There isn't any way to bypass it as far as I can see it.
And--please don't take this as lecturing, scolding or anything like it--I understand why dA has this restriction. The content that you have here is advertising commissions. That's something that dA reserves for journals on a deviant's personal profile page, not in a group page or anywhere else. I admin 4 groups and if someone submitted something like this to our galleries, we would reject it immediately b/c it's advertising for commissions. We don't even allow rp requests in some of my groups. I hope you can see and understand why this restriction is there.
Well, I hope that reassures you that it's not just you that it happened to. Let me know if you have any other questions ^^

Well gosh! That all makes sense! (And goodness I would NEVER take it as lecturing! I understand completely~) Well, although I really didn't want to make this a journal submission I will need to go in and fix that! Thank you again SO much for looking it over for me! I really appreciate it~ I hope that finals aren't too rough on you and that they all go well for you! You are the BOMB~

Good luck! I hope you find a way around it...not sure there is one. I've finished the teaching part of finals; tomorrow starts the grading part =__=; ugh soooo not looking forward to that. (and aw shucks, I'm glad to help )

For some reason whenever I try to choose its category it will only let me pick journal... and I followed all your steps. I just don't get it its never done this before.

You did select "Submit Art" or "St.ash" right? Not "Write a Journal Entry", correct? If so, then it should work. If not, there is a step that I wasn't 100% explicit with b/c I didn't think to be more detailed. I'll give it to you here:
Step 8: There are now 2 things you absolutely must do in order to submit the literature: (1) Indicate whether the submission "Contains Mature Content". This you'll find directly below an thumbnail of the text you just entered. & (2) Selecting a category. Select "Literature". From there, you'll need to select subcategories. If it's fan fiction, select "Fan Fiction" and then its genre. If it's poetry, select "Poetry" and then the genre. If it's fiction, select "Prose" and then "Fiction", then the genre and then either "Flash Fiction" (for one-shot fiction that's under 100 words), "Introductions and Chapters" (which is the one you select if it's a multi-chapter story) or "Short Stories" (which run from 1-20 pages in length; anything longer than 20 pages is considered a novella). The key is to just keep following the layers until you reach the end of them. dA will give you an example of it so you'll know if it's the right one (after a while dA will default to your most frequently used categories).
This will work regardless of the method you use. If it doesn't, I'll need a bit more information on the steps you went through (or you may have to contact tech support).

I'm currently having trouble submitting a fanfiction through Stash. Every time I get it ready for submission, the only category options I get to submit it in is in Journal Portal or just Journal. Before this I had all category options at least show up, and from there I could submit to Literature or to Fan Art then FanFiction. Do you know of any recent issue or glitch in the Stash system?

Not that I can see. Where are you going to submit your fanfiction? Are you going to "Submit" and then "Sta.sh"? I'm not even sure why you only have those two category options.
Please explain the process you go through to submit, then maybe I can help.

I posted my problem in a couple other places and found some deviants with similar issues. Apparently using a different browser (particularly IE) allowed them to submit normally. They have reported the issue.
I usually Compose in Stash and then Submit to dA. I've never had any issue with it b4, all the regular category options and gallery options would show up, but not that time! It was really strange and kinda frustrating, I just hope it doesn't happen again.
Thanks for responding.

Weird. I submit with Firefox and have no real issues (not that I can see).
And I hear you about things not causing problems before. So was your issue resolved?

The issue was resolved but now my computer's facing an even bigger issue. My DNS server's not responding, whatever that means, and I don't have access to anything anymore. I've tried troubleshooting but the problem's just getting worse :/
Maybe I'll call the computer company tomorrow, otherwise I feel like breaking my laptop.

Arrrgh that is one of the worst kind of issues (speaking from experience). Good luck with getting that fixed (hopefully they won't charge you).

That sucks but...
I'm glad you got it fixed. I love university computer help desk people. IMO they are as good or better than the pros and you don't have to pay them by the hour b/c the student fees already took care of their pay.

I usually type up my stories into Word, then copy + Paste it into enter text, then I just adjust the spacing.

I like formatting my fics, so entering text is the least attractive of the 3 methods. You should try the Sta.shWriter, it's awesome! I've never been able to add art into my writing like that...only as a preview pic.

It was fun. I really enjoyed the feature of being able to add a pic. The egg you see there isn't one of my deviations either. It's one I uploaded specifically for this tutorial.
