February 2022 Rainforest Monthly Prompt for Marrow and Hazel

“Get off, you insufferable little rat! I’ve got places to be!”
Hazel pushed the summer-dry dirt into the air with a back hoof, forming a reddish cloud that further stained their already filthy feathers. Despite his size, the little surgeon was having surprising success in holding their front leg off the ground, preventing them from storming off.
“You are my patient and you can leave when I have dismissed you!”
With professional precision, Marrow reached up behind their flailing front leg that he was hanging from and jabbed a paw into the soft skin. With a spasm the massive struggling hippus lost control of their hoof and nearly toppled to the ground. They caught themselves just in time to not fall on top of the small harpy, who seemed to somehow be gaining the upper hand in their scuffle. A pain that had grown all too familiar lately shot through their lower stomach, and forced them the rest of the way to the ground. The ever-flowing spittle in their mouth tasted metallic and their eyes were unfocussing, only able to make out the dull orange glow on the Western horizon. The threatening rumble had left their voice, leaving it shaky and freid.
“You don't understand. I have to go to my family. They need my help…”
“You can't even help yourself in your condition. You’re just crawling into the Expanse to die! I'll make you better, then you can do whatever you want.”
Hazel pressed their face into the dust, jerky breaths rocking their chest. Of course, he was right. There was no way to make it across to the foothills while the murrain still had a hold on their system. Marrow had let go of their foot and, judging the escape attempt foiled, laid a comforting paw on their wing.
‘Mothers, Oak, Grandfather… Please stay safe. I’ll come for you soon, I promise!’
