we talk a lot about finding the balance between a nicely simplistic but forgettable design and a cluttered but memorable design and honestly i really feel like you've found that balance with feara? like she's very visually pleasing and memorable it's good

Oh gosh I love this ref!! I love the simplistic choice in ref, it gives people enough to draw them. I totally understand what you mean by not revealing too much, since I'm working on a story myself. "Show not tell" is pretty much the basic rule. I love the color palette?? I have SUCH a hard time with color palettes and design. If you don't mind how did you come up with Feara?? Sorry if I sound annoying. I'm just so inspired and look up to your art!! I believe your Feara and Jerrel painting pushed me to do digital painting and brought my style here now. Honestly I can't thank you enough!! Your style has gotten me through so much!!Β

Feara (and her friend Jerrel) are the first OCs I ever created! Back in 2009.
These are photos from ages ago so please excuse the quality

this is the very first picture of them, Feara on the left Jerrel on the right aha
and she was also a god for a while oh god
Feara and Jerrel were basically characters I used to cope with feelings I've got from books or shows I watched. Which is why their story wasΒ AΒ L OΒ T like warrior cats in the beginning, and it got gradually more overdone, where feara died a few times and G O T U P again because she was aΒ god or something. Of course all of these past stories aren't applied to herself now.

I didn't draw them for a while, but here is how they evolved:

and their story changed a lot? I still wasn't sure wether they shouldbe anthros or not. And they also didn't really have a point aha
I basically forgot about both for aΒ LO NG time and eventually drew this
Β out of nowhere and I thought "hey this could be Feara" and then SUDDENLY her design changed to this:

The concepts there still apply to her to this day!! Her personality has become deeper and the story has a proper plotline, character arc and twists and turns. I'm very proud of it too

and THEN she became the feara she is now.
Means this doggo has a lot of history, and I had years to figure out how to make her colors harmonize perfectly also in combination with her good friend pal Jerrel.

I think the best way to visually describe her is a fennec fox, but she's not a fennec fox. It's all intermingled with her Story, so I can't tell you what exactly she is.
