Description (If you look at the original base I did indeed edit out the long mane! I promise his hair is short, it's just funky at this angle Ain't changing it again, I wanna focus on the story!)

Fauna  and Hugh  stand side by side, munching grass. They have some sort of semi-friendship going on and Fauna really hates to ruin it with what she has to say. Thankfully Hugh accidentally makes the transition for her.
"So what do you wanna do after this?"

She looks over at him with a face dripping in regret. "Nothing. Nothing at all...oh Hugh we can't keep going on like this!" Fauna exclaims.

Hugh is perplexed. She's obviously distressed by the way she's shaking her mane out like that. He thought they were on good terms?
"Hey hey it's okay, tell me exactly what you mean. Please don't get so worked up over something I've done."

"I can't do anything with you ever again Hugh. Whatever we have going on has to be over, it just has to be!" Fauna takes a big gulp of air to help form a solid thought. "The herd...they HATE us Hugh! More specifically me since you actually have rank. They hate us and I can't protect you like a good partner or friend should. In the same way you can't protect me either. United we'd fall. The thought of me dragging you down makes my heart hurt so much Hugh, it hurts so so so bad." She hangs her head, speech slurred by unshed tears.
"See? I'm crying again. Everything makes me cry or run and that just shows how weak and soft I am. You need someone who can actually take care of you in danger since this world doesn't smile on those who show their bellies."

Hugh bites his lip. What she's upset about is a legit concern! He's seen the dirty looks they've been thrown when hanging out. But his own heart hearts to see her large lively eyes drown in sadness. To hear her voice crack in misery. To see her body deflate at holding up the burden of doing the right thing. He too would like to do the right thing!
"Oh Fauna, please stop fretting! It might be what I need, but you forgot to ask about what I want. And all I want to do is see you smiling again." He isn't sure if touching her would be okay yet so he stands awkwardly next to her.

Fauna sniffles and nods. "A...and I want to see a time where you don't feel the need to run or hide all of the time. That won't happen if we keep this up. I'm just tired Hugh. I'm tired of being seen as weak, cute, and useless. At least you have a chance! You can still find that special someone who will put you back on the throne you deserve."

"Fauna! Stop this nonsense!" Hugh is horrified at the thought of leaving her behind like that. She deserves a throne too! Even if she is the worst Caretaker on the planet. "I'm not going anywhere. Not unless you come with me. If we die then at least there's no one I'd rather die with! And so what if horses scoff? Our happiness is none of their concern. If we need to run away so be it. Actually, I hope it never gets to that point...but you get what I'm saying."

She's left so speechless that her tears have ceased. "You really mean that Hugh? You'd actually...do that for...me? But why?"

"I'm not quite sure. Maybe it's your nimble movements, or maybe I just like your meek personality. Either way I mean it!" Hugh can relax now. Making big profound statements like that are stressful!
"You go, I'll follow."

"I'm still not what you need Hugh." Fauna has a tiny faint smile pricking at her muzzle as she scoots over to give him a careful hug.

"I'll be the judge of that, okay? Actually, I know what we both need right now!" Hugh is struck with an idea! One that she will hopefully like.

"What's that?" Fauna looks up, radiating curiosity. And a hint of uncertainty. There's always a glimmer of that in everything she does.

"We need one complete day of relaxation. A day with no fear or danger. I have some locations in mind already. Imagine chilling on a cool bed of moss munching apples." Hugh declares a vacation. He too is sick of being on the run.

"Can I imagine laying in a pretty meadow while staring at the clouds while I'm at it?" Fauna's tiny grin has grown into a full one. "Frolicking in the grass?"

"All of that and more I bet. Let's meet here at sunrise tomorrow and go from there if that's alright with you." Hugh is very excited but will keep his manners. Her schedule is important after all.

Fauna nods enthusiastically. Oh Hugh is just the sweetest thing! Oop he's waiting for her to say something. "Yea! That sounds amazing!"
-------------------------------
And it was. The reject pair had a lovely time hiking old abandoned Scout trails, splashing each other in crystal streams, and laughing their heads off at lame jokes. The moss was perfectly cool on their skin, the apples delectable on their tongues. It seemed that the clouds tried their hardest to sculpt into obvious images, just for them to identify. The grass practically sang as they swished through in silly games of tag! But alas all good times must come to an end, and sunset arrived far too soon.

Fauna and Hugh stand snuggled together, staring at the darkening sky. Or, pretending to anyway. Mostly they were trying to figure out how to steal just one more peck without making it too awkward. This just made things progressively more...well...awkward. But they were both so elated from their fantastic day that it didn't even matter.
"It's okay Hugh, just choose a cheek. I promise I won't mind." Fauna blushes in pleasure when he selects the right side and bestows a small smooch. "The sky is so pretty tonight."

"The perfect way to end a perfect day." Hugh agrees, tearing his gaze from her. He knows tomorrow everything will be back to normal. High speed jobs, life or death chases...

These thoughts are weighing on Fauna as well. "I don't want this to end, I really don't."

"It'll be okay Fauna, I promise. Listen I have one more great idea." Hugh gently nuzzles her forehead until she snaps out of whatever mental state she entered. "We might not be able to save each other, but we can protect and prevent bad things from happening in some ways. If we work together."

"Oh! Like a buddy support system! Yes that's wonderful." Fauna yawns. "You always know just what to do." She rests her head right underneath his in order to discuss possible plans.

The two murmur long after the sun has dipped below the horizon. Eventually their talking ceases as each one drops off into a peaceful sleep.
-------------------
"Hugh! Look out, attacker at 2 o'clock!" Fauna hollers as she gallops like mad past the horse who was stalking her beloved. The intruding horse whinnies in fury once the ambush was given away, and they charge after the flighty mare. She easily outspeeds it and loops back around to make sure Hugh has found a hiding spot. All good! She can't even tell which way he went.

Sometime later the two have regrouped and are taking turns napping. One stays awake as lookout. This time it's Hugh's turn to alert; as soon as he notices a threatening herd member he simply leans over to give her a tap. She snaps awake and they hold their ground on high alert until the threat has either passed or decided to attack.

"Y'know, I guess my fears weren't well-founded at all. I'm sorry for freaking out like that before Hugh." Fauna laughs after they've escaped yet again another assault.

"Definitely. I feel a lot less fear with you around to watch my back. It's really nice." He smiles and bumps their sides together.

"United we stand! Being together really isn't so scary after all."
----------------------------------
Hugh and Fauna may be the 'weak links' of the herd, but they sure aren't stupid! I'm sure they'd figure out how to defend themselves and each other against angry violent horses. I also tried to bring out Hugh's sweet side. I think deep down all stallions have the strong urge to protect, even the not-so-strong ones. Fauna is an anxious mess and Hugh is scared but able to balance her out.
The last two bits are sorta brain barf since I'm big tired and don't feel like writing 200 pages. Love these two scaredy-cats ^.^
