"Turquoise, you're far too lenient! You can't protect every defective gem in the galaxy! If you make excuses for these two you would have to do it for every gem. And if you do that the empire will collapse! You're almost as bad as Pink!"-Yellow Diamond
They're twins because their gem cracked and split during production, causing two of essentially the same gem, but defective. The skinnier taller one has a bigger fragment while the short one has the smaller half. Turquoise took them in anyways despite their defects being the kindhearted ruler she is and named them "Tall" and "Small". Tall is more giddy and bubbly and hyper like a typical spinel. Small is calmer and relies on verbal humor like puns and riddles. They initially looked the same except for their size but Turquoise Diamond requested they use differing outfits to help distinguish them as two separate beings. The main defect they possess is that they can read each other's thoughts and memories even when not fused since they are one singular gem that survived a crack, but still recognizes itself. Yellow tried to talk Turquoise into disposing of these two and making another attempt, but being kinder Turquoise insisted on keeping them. Pink Spinel is still out there in this AU btw. When they created these two they didn't know she hadn't been destroyed with Pink.
Their gem is located on their right shoulders.
