Do you mind I change it........... A LOT? like: Removing the Background and the dress,almost completely changing the face and like basically turning it into something with a bit of dark/sinister feel to it? I want to use it as a cover for a story I'm writing

Isnt it against the rules to trace the background, too? Also, you can't ask for credit for something you DIDN'T MAKE.

As long as you make some sort of alteration, you can trace as much of it as you want. The eyes are obviously drawn difference and hell, just the fact that it's a base, and there's no hair is enough of a change for DA.
And DA says you can, though actually doing it is considered 'polite', but it's not against the rules not to do so. I have the FAQ in my sig, in fact, if that helps. ^_^

DA doesnt allow tracing, though. Which this obviously is, regardless of the difference in the eyes.

Actually, DA DOES allow tracing, and has several FAQ on the issue. Here's an example of one. ^_^

When copying from an established source it is considered good etiquette to credit your source. Also please note that it may be considered unacceptable to precisely duplicate another existing work by directly tracing or reproducing every single detail so that it is difficult to tell your work from the original, so please be certain to add your own personal touches and style.
What that means is, referencing, and tracing, are fine, as long as you alter the lines and don't directly duplicate them.
I've actually had two conversations with DA admin on the subject.

The only lines she "altered" was the eye. She traced every other line in the drawing, so its still against the rules.

Well, you really can't prove she traced the eye from somewhere else. And the fact that it's a base, dA considers it altered enough because it has no hair.

Perhaps she's not breaking DA's rules, but she's not going to get anywhere or improve at all by tracing other people's art. But thats cool, I mean, who wants to work hard on original art when stealing someone else's is sooo much easier? derp

Also, I will point out, that tracing CAN help you improve depending on the type of person you are. I have a friend who used to be terrible at drawing the female body. He's been tracing for two years and hasn't drawn a single thing himself until recently. When he did, he drew two women, free hand, from his mind with no reference. they looked undenyably better. No classes, just tracing. It helps you learn how your hand should move and the general flow of anatomy. You know, like tracing letters and numbers in kindergarten? It's a tactic used by professionals everywhere. And I honestly find it funny when casual artists try to say it doesn't work. I, myself, traced and color edited for two years. Everything I draw now is hand-drawn from reference. I tried classes, and none of them worked for me. Everything I learned was from tracing.
Everyone learns differently. Just because it doesn't work for you, doesn't mean it won't work for someone else.

Aha, and thats where youre wrong. I used to trace myself, when I was younger, and yes it helped me improve. I didnt mean to imply that tracing doesnt help you, I simply meant that putting traced art on sites like deviantart as if they are your own creation is wrong and just pisses people off.

And some people like to see it. And some people don't care about improving, they just want the pose for their OC.
It's cool that you admit that it helped you improve, though. I tell some people about the tracing in kindergarten thing, and they reply with stupid stuff like 'Well, tracing's for kids', I reply with 'when you're new at something, you ARE like a small child that doesn't know how', and then it just turns into this huge insult fest about tracers being stupid, infantile, etc.

So basically, they took a poll on a site filled mostly with tracers, and they actually expected the results to be fair? Of course more people "dont care" about tracing, because most of the people on this site are tracers themselves. Just sayin.

It becomes an issue of...that's okay on this site. The reason is irrelevant. If you want to be here, you have to learn to live with that. You bother people who harass too many times, you can get banned for harassment. It isn't worth it to push your opinion onto someone who doesn't want to know it, and then possibly get banned.

Well, that actually depends on the admin. Bothering someone about stuff like this, some admin will slap your wrists. Others will just tell the other person to put you on ignore and move on.

Depends on who you ask. But I really don't care enough about this convo anymore to continue. I just got back from my grandmother's funeral, and I heard literally like 20 people stand up and tell her how awesome she is. It made me...well, let's just say again I don't care enough to carry on this convo...

first of all, it's not stealing if they trace. However minor, it does put forth effort. Secondly, not everyone cares if they improve. Some people only want to share a mental image of their character with people in an environment like dA and have no delusions of grandeur of having a career in art. To insult them for that is judgemental and ignorant.
