Welcome to Community Week!
Today we will take a look into a quick relief print tutorial. The beauty of this branch of the printing family is the endless possibilities the printing block provides.
Unlike a one-hit-wonder painting, a carved print block can be inked in a variety of colors and printed on all sorts of beautiful papers. You can take these prints and incorporate them into any art medium too!
Wait, what is Relief Printmaking?
“A form of printmaking by carving or etching into a surface, creating a raised area that will catch ink and transfer onto paper with pressure. The types of Relief techniques include woodcut, metal cut, wood engraving, relief etching, linocut, rubber stamp, and foam printing.”
Here’s a list of what you’ll need to get started:
Drafting design:
- Pencil, sketch Paper, tracing paper, colored pencils/markers
Carving:
- Transfer paper, tape, Permanent marker, Lino block, Lino carving set, Non-slip mat
Printing:
- One color of Water-based block ink (speedball), tray, Brayer, spoon, any paper
*Oil Inks: Oil inks are wonderful, but take extra steps in preparation and clean-up. They take a LOT more time to dry. Unless you have the experience, space for drying, and time to clean, I highly suggest you stick with water-based. If you have any further questions about Oil Inks, feel free to message me. (:
Drawing a design.
Paper and pencil. Or maybe you want to dive into your sketchbooks for inspiration. Maybe there’s a drawing that is inspiring and great for printing that needs a few finishing touches.
Help! What makes a good design for printing?
Ask yourself:
- How would you render your image with only one color?
You might be tempted to put a lot of fine line work at first. If this is your first time I suggest keeping your design simple.
- How big is your lino block?
The Smaller your block, the less detail you should be putting into your drawing. If you can’t outline your linework with a regular sharpie, it’s probably too complicated for the size you’re going to carve.
Ideally, thick lines and bold shapes tend to make your life easy during carving.
I sketched out my design and realized that it might be too much for a small block. I took out my trusty tracing paper and made a new draft.
Try this:
Scan or take photos of your design.Upload it onto your computer. Make a sheet of the same image.Print it out. Make +6 color studies using markers or highlighters. This will give you confidence and save time when you’re carving out the image.
Picking carving materials
Our number one goal is making art AND safety! So, when you’re browsing for a Lino block consider the pre-mounted. It’ll cost just a little more but it’ll save you the frustration of carving through holes in the lino and potential boo-boos when you’re carving. (:
Transfer your design
First, make sure there’s no dust or debris on the lino surface.
Tape the tracing paper with your design on two sides, being aware of the lino block’s edges.
Now slide the tracing paper between the lino block and your design. Make sure the lighter side is facing you. With a ballpoint pen, trace your design with a fair amount of pressure. It’s ok if you accidentally mess up. That’s why we have the permanent marker!
Take off the tracing and transfer paper. Carefully outline the design. Sometimes it’s helpful to color in the areas you want to avoid carving out. This is where your color studies come in handy.
Carving and Safety
Before diving into carving, let’s cover the safety. You might believe you are a seasoned veteran artist. You may have survived years of accidents and close calls already, but I assure you, the chisel will win, 10 out of 10 times against your soft mushy skin.
- Please wear proper enclosed toe shoes, know where your first-aid kit is, and invest in an inexpensive non-slip mat.
- Know where your hand placement in relation to your carving direction.
- Sometimes I put both hands on the chisel so I can anchor the sides of my hands on the block.
- If you’re tired, or distracted, take a break. The Lino block doesn’t need to be finished in one sitting.
The Wrong Way

There goes my hand modeling career. 
The Safe Way
My hands are out of harm's way, yet still able to hold the block safely.
Even though the second example shows the chisel pointed at my chest, both my hands are anchored to the block. So I won't slip and hurt myself.
Which chisel should I use?
The “V” gouge for more detail orient carving. Use it for those small spots or specific lines you need.
The “U” gouge is great for carving out big areas.
Take time to experiment with all the chisel tips you have in the areas that will be carved out. You’ll find out what works out best for you. Remember, be patient with yourself!
Ready to print?!
This is the moment all your hard work will pay off! All you need is any paper lying around, a few water-based block inks, a tray to roll out ink, and a brayer.
Worried about your health and mess?
Use Nitrile gloves and tape newspaper down on your table.
Also, you can finally break out that delightful apron you’ve always wanted to use.
Start out with a quarter size amount of ink.
Roll over the ink, changing the direction of the brayer for quicker coverage.

Listen to the sound of the brayer in this video. This is how you know you have the right amount of ink.
Avoid rolling too much ink onto your block. The ink tends to squish into the beautiful small details you just carved out. (see photo below)
Oops, I used too much ink! What do I do?
First, wipe the excess off with a paper towel. Then wash the block off in the sink. Let it dry completely before trying to roll the ink back on.
Roll the brayer over the lino block with even pressure. Depending on your design, it might be tricky not to hit the spots you carved out. Just take your time and be patient with yourself.
With clean hands, Place your paper ONTOP of the block. You can use your hands, or a spoon, to rub the paper with a little pressure. Be careful about the paper moving around. That could smear the ink.
Finally, lift the paper up and marvel at your delightful creation! You deserve it!

Troubleshooting
Some prints won't turn out, and that's ok!
