Description Some color and concept tests I did with my prismacolors. The idea is that these ten-foot-tall giants communicate like humboldt squid or other cephalopods, using a complex system of specialized chromatophores. Their ancestors originally would have used this feature for camouflage, but these sophonts have specialized this system into something used strictly for communication.

The three small examples are meant to be examples of varying stages of social stimulation, going from high-stress/combat at the top to strict formality at the bottom. I also included a coloured sketch of an alien brave in woven armor, because I've been working on the design for a while, and I really liked it.

Beautiful! No sound based communication?

Nope. Think about it - if a creature can see in 360 degrees, sound might not be as important a sense for survival.

Ahhh ok, how does it communicate with humans? Have we learned to recognize the color patterns?

Wow, very nice. Great coloration. The weaved-clothing/armor on the bottom one adds a nice touch.

Lovely. They have a real sense of solidity and weight.

Won't the armor get in the way of communication?

Thanks.

With the armor, it would have to get in the way of communication a bit. But to what extent, I still need to work on. I think it needs to be a little bit more open in places...

Well, how much could knights talk with helmets on? Maybe there could be some sort of hinged flap over the place where these things do most of their visualization.

That being said though, are they deaf? Do they have any sense of hearing? If not, battle-field coordination must be difficult.
