I love the warm colours and the soft outlines. Pretty much blends in with the atmosphere of the painting
Good job!

This is so cute! I really like the setting, and all the colors just seem to go so well together. Not to mention, it's always nice to see fanart of Final Fantasy VI. This piece certainly made my day!

i want to ask...did you plan out the perspective for the room and things in this picture, or did you just eyeball it?

lovely illustration I need to start drawing more backgrounds .__.

For this picts, I plan out the perspective but not seriously. Just find the horizon line(in mention of perspective) and then it's easy to eyeball.
Thanks for your comment. Sorry if my reply isn't clear. That's a bit difficult to explain a technique theme in English.

This looks great, but there's one HUGE thing wrong with it! The arm/leg ratio is way off! Either you need to redo the arms or remove the boots and terminate the legs with feet at the knees area.

Other than that, i really enjoy this piece. The rolls of paper and what look like metal plates stacked in the back are instant favorite pieces, and the sunlight on the floor is another

Judging by the consistence of the work, wouldnt you think of it as a style thing?

whalewithlegs In reply to hnmAck [2009-09-09 23:55:27 +0000 UTC]

I can see, looking back at some of the other pics, what you mean ... it's something that makes the piece fail visually, therefore a detracting element, though. Gotta fix it. Won't grow as an artist otherwise.

hnmAck In reply to whalewithlegs [2009-09-15 14:43:15 +0000 UTC]

It's a cartoon. And that's what usually an artist seeks in a cartoon, to emphasize certain aspects of an image trough exageration of whatever they choose to. It's ok to do not like it, but its so much different to say he/she wont grow as an artist, because the image does not complies with anatomically correct proportions, aka realism.

Obviously, there is no intent for realism in this pic.

Also, in base of your comment then all cartoons fail visually, cuz the inconsistence with reality its a detracting element and therefore the artists do not grow.

That doesnt makes sense at all.

Look, stylization is good, I'm not arguing with you about that. Just because something is stylized, however, does not automatically place it above reproach. Labeling something as a 'cartoon' doesn't imply a divorce from realism in favor of 'whatever they choose.' This isn't about style, it's about unity.

'No intent for realism in this piece'??? ... that's just an insult to ~prema-ja

You really need to scrutinize your logic. This whole premise is just setting up a straw man. I'll be more willing to discuss this if you'll just admit that you're insulted that I criticized ~prema-ja instead of trying to get some imaginary artistic upper hand on me. What you're trying to do is noble, but it just amounts to insulting me, not actually defending a point. I'm sure ~prema-ja can take the criticism, and I don't think ~prema-ja will actually appreciate an argument going on in their comment space .. if you REALLY have something to say to me, and not just some well-intended defense, take it to the notes.

It would have been more constructive to take an idea and analize it rather than /focuslasers/take everything as insults/ destroy just one paragraph of the previous post and ignore everything else, so we all can grow together.

Because, that's the intent behind your words right?
About the dude:
- Consistency
- Propper spacial projection
- Proper focus lines
- Corresponding body features correlated with one another (head arms, hands, body, legs)

[link]

Pete's legs are way small to emphasize his upper body as bigger, guess this dude wont grow up as an artist either if that "problem" is not fixed?

About realism. Realism focused on body proportions, not realism as in the painting style of depicting stuff as it happens in real life, - without interpretation or enhancements. [link] )

I would choose, longer and thinner legs as an enhancement, and maybe the dramatic light effects. Then it is not realism by definition. Altough, if you section the image in charachter/background - the last is the one that might be not enhanced or interpreted.

About the insults, you seem to know pretty well the piece owner; so you already are sure hes taking my previous realism argument as insult. If that is the case, I beg for pardon, and I would have nothing more to say.(But the case is that ~prema-ja hasnt said anything yet.)

Personally I would love to have thriving arguments, conversations, opinions and all kind of stuff going on in my comments, because that's what this sections is intended for, people commenting, but that just one man's opinion. Yours is that "~prema-ja doesn't appreciate an argument going on in their comment space". Don't you feel something is awkward about that?

=======================================
Just to add. Is this thing still about arm/leg ratio?

whalewithlegs In reply to hnmAck [2009-09-30 07:27:03 +0000 UTC]

Let me start out by apologizing ... my taking offense at your statements was based off of my perception of your intent. Your intent was not clearly communicated, however, due to mistakes in your argument, leading you to misrepresent yourself. And you yourself did, in fact, make the first statement that could be construed as an insult to the other argumentator: "That doesnt makes sense at all." I realize that for some people direct criticism is not the most constructive tactic for mutual growth ... excuse me as I attempt to amend the manner in which I point out holes in arguments. I'll try to address each of your points and give you credit where it's due:

A) Good point about the comment area. I shouldn't have assumed its use was limited.

B) Saying that a statement construes itself as an insult does not imply that the one it is directed at is insulted. For my part, I didn't realize you were using the term to refer to the art-specific definition. I made this assumption based off of your inconsistent capitalization, in part, & shouldn't have been using the term fluidly with you given my perception of your conversational skills by this point. You're still calling realism Realism, even in your definition: [link]

C) Ok, going back to the main issue ... my intent was to say that the image does not READ right. Leg-to-arm ratio regardless, the image LOOKS wrong. The hands look different sizes, the foreshortening makes the arm lengths look different, and yes, the arms look wrong in part because they're short. Your point about body ratio is a GREAT point! One shouldn't confuse stylization with structural weakness, however. I'm not even saying that one can't base a great style off of a structural weakness. Prema still needs to fix the image for it so stand alone. The sister image:[link] does not have the same problem, though it has the same polarization of leg-to-arm ratio. The Disney image doesn't have the same problem, though it is heavily stylized.

D) The reason you came across as pretentious about cartooning was because of your insistence that this IS cartoon. I realize now that you're not insulted about my criticism of the piece itself, but by what you perceive as a criticism of a genre: cartoon. I am hardly criticizing cartooning, though I again apologize if it didn't come across clearly. I will, however, continue to take issue with you about this piece being a cartoon & a cartoon only. Not only is it submitted as a digital painting (though I hate to fall back on DA's asenine categorization system as support), it lacks certain elements that would make it more appropriate to call it a cartoon, like cell-shading, just to name one thing.

Did I respond to everything?
