Description
When I was a little colt, I didn't have the one thing many take for granted...a mom.My mother, Iris, passed away when I was very young, and I can barely remember her. My father rarely talked about her, he only said that she was the most beautiful mare, she was very sick, but her body was too weak...and she held my little hoof as she passed.
After my mom died, my father and I moved to Ponyville. Dad was friends with Apple Jack's parents, who died in a train de-railing a few years prior. We lived in a little house next to the market in town, many nights I listened to dad cry himself to sleep, and every time I knew why...mom.
Things weren't always bad, dad took time off from his duties in the Equestrian Military to be with me. He taught me how to fly a kite, how to fish, shoot, perform basic magic, the difference between right and wrong, how to treat a lady, heh he would love Scootaloo.
One day I found him in his room with his dogtags in his hooves, I could tell he was deep in thought, and I asked him, "Dad? where you a hero during the war?" Dad gave me a sad look as tears filled his eyes, and he gave me a response I will never forget, "No, the real heroes are the one's who never came home...and I served along side with many heroes."
Then came the day dad was called back to service. He told me to be a stallion, be strong for him, and for myself. He wanted to fight for his country, and for those who couldn't fight for themselves...to support me.
The Apples watched after me and I helped out on the farm, Big Mac, AJ, and Apple Bloom were like the brother and sisters I never had, and I became an honorary member of the CMC. Miss Cheerilee was very supportive herself, I would stay after school sometimes, just to talk to her...to find some comfort. She was sweet and understanding, heck, she still is, and I can't thank her enough for that.
I was outside bucking apples with AJ, when a jeep pulled up to the farm, it was General Armor himself, with...news.
My heart sank, the world around me shattered as he gave the news...my dad was killed in action overseas. I cried for weeks, I felt lost, even with all of Ponyville's support, I felt alone. Instead of sending me to the orphanage, the apples took me in as one of their own, they treated me like blood, and I attended many of the family reunions. dad is buried next to mom, on the outskirts of the farm, under the one tree hill. I visit their graves to pray and to talk whenever I find time.
The CMC, and AJ and her 5 friends were always there for me, I wanted to follow in my dad's footsteps, so I joined the military after high school. After surviving the war, and returning to the place I call home after all these years, I feel alive for once in my life.
I can't explain why, but every time I see my reflection...I see them standing next to me.

Being a veteran, I can whole-heartedly agree with the sentiment that the true heroes are the ones that didn't come home. This little short snippet brought tears to my eyes.Β
