Description

Intersex is a term for those born with physical sex characteristics that cannot be traditionally classified as male or female.[1] Variations may appear in a person’s chromosomes, natural hormones, genitalia, or gonads, secondary sex characteristics, or some combination of these things. Intersexuality is observed in many animals including humans. According to the ISNA it is estimated that as many as 1.7% of people are born with intersex traits.[2] [3]

Intersex does not describe a specific body type but rather is an umbrella term for a broad range of conditions. Some intersex individuals may closely resemble one of the binary sexes, while others are closer to in between. An intersex person may have characteristics of both the male and female sexes, characteristics that fall somewhere in between male or female, or characteristics that don't fall into either.

Intersex individuals may have any gender identity, including male , female , and non-binary .[4] They may identify as cisgender or transgender , or possibly another gender modality such as ipsogender or ultergender . Intersex people can have any assigned gender at birth, some may be AMAB or AFAB because their condition of intersex was not noticed at birth. Others may be corrosively assigned male/female at birth (CAMAB/CAFAB), meaning they had nonconsensual surgery preformed on them so their body more closely fits one of the binary sexes. In some rare cases they are AXAB . Each intersex person has a unique relationship to their gender, assigned gender at birth, the gender they were raised as, and how that relates to their experience being intersex. Intersex is included in the LGBT+ community, though not all intersex people consider themself to be LGBT+ on the basis on being intersex. This is largely a personal choice based on how one's status as intersex has (or hasn't) affected their experiences.

Someone who is not intersex is called dyadic or perisex. Intersex is not an identity, but is something one is born as. Some intersex traits are identified at birth, while others may not be discovered until puberty or later in life (although, the variation was always present, just unnoticed). One cannot "transition to intersex". Dyadic people who desire mixed sex traits may identify as altersex .

Non-Binary (sometimes shortened to NB or enby) refers to someone whose gender does not fall strictly within the category of the binary genders (man or woman ) that are used in western society. Anyone who is not always, solely, 100% male or always, solely, 100% female can be considered non-binary. Some non-binary may identify with one or both of the binary genders, at least in part, while others are completely unrelated to the binary genders.

Non-binary can be a gender identity on its own, or it can be used as an umbrella term for anyone whose gender is something other than male or female. Some people may also use the term genderqueer interchangeably with non-binary.

Non-binary people may call themselves enbies or borls (the equivalent of boys or girls) or enben (the equivalent of men or women).[1] [2] Non-binary is included in the umbrella of transgender , although some non-binary people choose not to identify as transgender.

Transfeminine or trans-fem is a gender identity where one was assigned male at birth (AMAB ), but identifies fully or partially as a woman or another gender(s) with significant amounts of femininity . Transfeminine people can also identify as other, non-feminine genders as well. For example, an AMAB androgyne person may identify as transfeminine. Though typically one's feminine identities are more significant that one's non-feminine identities. Transfeminine people are sometimes called MtF or M2F (male to female).

Some transfeminine people include:

Transfeminine is sometimes used, not as a gender identity, but as a way to describe anyone who is assigned male at birth and undergoes femininization, either through surgery, hormone replacement therapy, or other methods (example: cross dressing) . Under this definition, men who take hormones to attempt to appear more feminine would be considered transfeminine.

The masculine equivalent to transfeminine is called transmasculine and the neutral equivalent is transneutral .

The AFAB equivalent is intrafeminine .
