Made with: www.dolldivine.com/sari-maker.phpAdi-Parashakti is the creative force of the Para Brahman (Supreme Being). This makes her the Supreme Mother Goddess, of whom all the goddesses come from in Hindu mythology. Whenever the world is plunged into chaos, she makes herself manifest in different forms.
Here are her major forms:
From upper left to right:
Mahasaraswati is the Goddess of Knowledge, Science and Arts. She is the consort/wife of Brahma, the creator. She is considered to be the mother of the vedas and the power behind Brahma's creative force. She is also known as his Shakti, Brahmani.
Mahalakshmi is the Goddess of Wealth and Beauty. She is the consort/wife of Vishnu, the Preserver and supreme manifestation of the Brahman (although he is seen as equal with Shiva). Because of her husband's importance in the pantheon, she is known as Mata Loka or Mother of the World.
Mahakali is the Goddess of Time and Destroyer of Evil. She is the fierce form and wife of Shiva, the destroyer. She is the slayer of demons and is the warrior form of...
Parvati, the Goddess of Power. She is also seen as a goddess of Motherhood and Marriage. She is the benign and gentle form of the Goddess. However, she is far from weak as she is the manifestation of "Shakti" or energy. This means she is the closest to Adi-Shakti.
Santoshi Mata is the daughter of Ganpati (Ganesh). She bestows the wishes of her devotees hence her name, Santoshi (Satisfaction). She is also the protectress of women in need.
Ganga Mata or Mother Ganga, is the personification of the Ganges river. She is sometimes known as Parvati's sister and in some versions, even Saraswati's rival for Vishnu's affection (in some scriptures, Saraswati was Vishnu's wife before she was Brahma's). She is mostly portrayed as an apsara (nymph).
Kaushiki or Chandika/Chamunda is another fierce warrior goddess form. She was born from Parvati and the slayer of Shumbh and Nuhmb. In other scriptures, she is seen as the highest form of Mahadevi.
and finally
Durga The Goddess of War, Victory of Good over Evil. She is the supreme manifestation of Adi-Parashakti. Made from the Jyoti's (light) from Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati, she was created and given weapons by the gods. For nine nights, she battled the demon Mahisasur and slew him. This is why she is also known as Mahisasur-Mardini (Slayer of Mahishasur).
