[Personality]

Positive

Respectful; Quailstep, though quiet and often reserved is never intending disrespect unless one earns it - he'll carefully listen to you if you're talking to him, and give advice. Not one to cause fights over petty reasons.

Empathetic; Quail does his best to understand and empathize with others, though some are easier attempted then done. He'll at least TRY to see things your way as best as he can manage.

Perceptive; Quail is good at both listening and seeing, as well as noticing odd bits and pieces to make note of. An overall useful trait for a shadowclan warrior to have, particularly here.

Neutral

Solitary; Quail is quite alright being by himself if needed - and sometimes if crowds or current events are overwhelming, he will seek it out. Unfortunately, at times this is not the best idea, or easy to achieve in a somewhat full clan.

Reserved; Naturally inclined to be quiet and reserved in most cases, oftentimes - unless needed or talked to - Quail doesn't say much. He's usually content to sit quietly and observe.

Self-conscious; The impression his size and general inability to keep much weight on gives is not lost on Quail - he's always aware of it, in the back of his mind.

Negative

Calculating; Quail sometimes leans on manipulation and guessing of how people may respond to get sympathy or something else. This is of particular use at gatherings, to get to a quiet comfortable spot, or to just see what someone will accidentally mention in passing, under-estimating, or worrying over the Little Cat...

Envious; Quail is envious of others who are a normal or larger size; envious of those who can build muscle tone and strength more easily, envious of those who hadn't had the 'opportunity' to be mocked, or seen as less of an adult cat due to being undersized and underweight. Sometimes this blinds him to the advantages his size and state does have.

Stiff; Due to Quail's nature of being quiet, and not being terribly talkative to strangers or those that don't talk to him first, he comes off as stiff and cold - and to some degree he is, particularly where strangers are involved.

Likes: Hunting, Birds, Comfortable places to sit, quiet folk

Dislikes: The Cold, attention being showered on his size when he didn't intend it to, loud and argumentative folk

[History]

Kithood [0 - 6 Moons]

Born into an extended family known for having very large and hefty kittens pop up, Quailkit was... decidedly the opposite. Dwarfed by his two littermates, Quail's parents worried he would not survive the week. Though there were several scares of Quail losing body temperature, he made it long enough to be named - and for his parents to discover his bright pupilless eyes. This, paired with Quail's very small and delicate size does not bode well - but after some prodding, it's evident the kit isn't blind, at least.

Quailkit steadily grows, always decidedly smaller and 'behind' every other kit in the nursery - leading to a cautious and overall quiet personality, the kit ever aware of how much easier it is for him to get hurt in a tussle. Eventually, he more regularly played with younger kits, gaining some much-needed muscle tone and stamina.

Apprenticeship [6 - 12 Moons]

With Quail still decidedly undersized, the then-leader almost apprentices him to the medicine cat - who swiftly declines, stating they'd select their own apprentice when they were good and ready, thank you very much. After some deliberation, Quailkit is apprenticed to a sleek molly - on the smaller side, though nowhere near as much as Quail is and will be - called Partridgetail.

Partridge works to get Quail more out of his shell primarily, somewhat sidelining hunting and combat for a period of time. Quail begins to interact with those of his own age more - albeit very carefully so, which proves to be the correct approach after a nasty round of bullying occurs - swiftly caught by the bullying apprentice's own mentor, and a talk from the clan leader putting an end to it. Quail takes this as a lesson - that his size is a tool to be used against him. Some of his hefty-bodied cousins and siblings don't take kindly to this either and often slink upon anyone approaching or talking to Quail to see what exactly is occurring- which, while he ... understands, finds to be a tad overbearing.

Still, he manages to socialize more like a proper -paw, and can even be downright charismatic at times - learning that sometimes, his side can be an advantage.

He passes his assessment neatly, finding his small size ideal for hunting birds, and his agility an advantage at times.

Warriorhood [12+ Moons]

Despite some skepticism given out by similarly aged warriors, he proves a capable hunter, and a suitable warrior - his ability to be almost unnoticed proving useful more then once. He was assigned one apprentice, an average-sized cat by the name of Fawnpaw. Their size difference proved interesting at times, but he managed to get Fawn to a warrior without the young nervous cat turning up dead - something that seems to be more of a rarity these days.

More recent happenstance would prove horrific to Quailstep, as much as to any other cat. The riverclan cats were treated much the same as his own clanmates that aren't friends or family yet - with quiet regard, and hardly a word unless he was engaged first, but regarded respectfully all the same.

At some point, one of his own cousins, Morningsight, rose to the rank of deputy, which certainly raised some familial pride for her in Quail's heart, and hearty congratulations, even if circumstances were ...unfortunate (a death of another deputy).

The recent horrorshow ending of the gathering (not that he was present, but all the same) has left the little tom apprehensive and bristling at any sign of smoke.
