Description
It was nearing the end of the term and I knew I’d be having tests soon. I’ve been having discussions with my teachers and parents because I haven’t been doing well in some of my classes, namely math and science. It was suggested that I find a tutor to help me understand the subjects I just wasn’t getting. Otherwise, when the tests rolled around, I would be in big trouble. I asked my math teacher if he knew anyone that was offering any tutoring services. He said he knew of one student, but wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to ask him. I didn’t understand why the teacher would say that. I was getting desperate by this point, so anyone would do. I was told I could find this student in Room 135, one of the school’s science labs. It was a big school, so there were a few different labs. However, this one was never used for classes, as it was always occupied by said student. I didn’t like being in the science lab even when I had to be, so I didn’t understand why one of the students would want to spend all his time in there.Once school was over for the day, I decided to go down to Room 135 to see if that student was still there. While on my way down, I spotted a couple of my friends and we chatted a bit. I mentioned going to the science lab to meet the guy who I had hoped would be my tutor. They suddenly gave me strange looks and asked me why I wanted to do that. This was my first year at this school, so there must have been something I wasn’t getting. I explained my desperation to them and they seemed to understand. “Well, good luck. You’re going to need it,” one friend said. I wonder what he meant by that. I eventually found my way to Room 135 and slowly opened the door. I poked my head in to make sure I wasn’t disturbing anything or anyone. “Is William Vanderhausen in here?” I asked, though made sure to not be too loud. “Huh? Oh, yes, yes. Come in. Come in,” said a voice. I entered the room to see a guy walk over. He was dressed very professionally in a medium blue dress shirt with a light purple necktie, brown dress pants, and brown dress shoes. Upon first glance, you would probably think he was one of the teachers. However, he looked to be about my age, maybe a year older. He was also a couple inches shorter than me. “Hello. I was just making notes of my solutions. What can I do for you?” the guy asked with a cheery smile. I quickly introduced myself and explained that I needed a tutor for math and science. “Ah! So, you’ve come to me for help? Wonderful! Wonderful! Sure, I will be more than willing to give you a hand. I love helping others learn the joys of math and science,” William said with absolute glee. Geeze! What a nerd! However, I was happy that I was able to get someone to tutor me before those big tests came about. He said we could meet up at his place, as there is a study where he can tutor me on the subjects I was having trouble with. I asked him how much he charged for his services. “Nothing,” he replied. “Nothing? Really? You don’t charge anyone for your work?” I asked. He shook his head. “Nope. Don’t need the money,” he replied. His family must have been wealthy or something. Probably explains the way he dresses. He must have to keep up appearances. “The only payment I will accept is that you help me with my experiments,” William said. Oh, great. What did this involve? Did he want me to help build a giant volcano, like you see kids making for science fairs on TV? Or perhaps he was one of those guys that liked to observe mice running around in a maze, trying to find the cheese. I’d rather be playing video games. However, if that was the only way he’d tutor me, I’d have to bite the bullet and do it. And, hey. It means I’m saving money as well.
Once everything was agreed upon, I went to leave, but then felt a hand placed upon my shoulder. “Hang on. Before you go, I want to do something to show my appreciation that you decided to choose me to be your tutor,” William said and began escorting me across the science lab. Well, this was strange. Why was he so happy just for being asked to be a tutor? He must not have very many friends. I guess that would be the case if you spent all your time in a science lab. “So, what? You going to show me a cool new experiment or something?” I asked. William chuckled. “No, silly,” he said and gestured to a mechanical chair that I hadn’t noticed was there, “I’m going to clean your teeth.” Wait, what?!! Hang on. This was getting weird. I tried to turn away, but was grabbed again. “Now, now. Don’t be shy,” William said as he sat me down in the chair. Shy? He thinks I’m being shy?! I tried to get up, but was pushed back down again. William then switched a lever on the side of the chair that clamped my arms and legs into place. “Now, now. I know you feel that this isn’t necessary,” William said, and boy was he right, “but I like to do things for people as a token of my gratitude.” As William spoke, he took a white medical mask out from a drawer and placed it over his face. “No, really. You don’t need to do this. Please let me go,” I said as I watched William put on a pair of white examination gloves. He then rolled over a tray and began placing a bunch of dental tools on it. Was this even legal? Didn’t this fall under practicing without a license or something? He couldn’t have a license, could he? “Nope! Sorry. No matter how much you try to tell me that this isn’t necessary, I’m still going to do it. I know people like to refuse a token of gratitude, just to be polite, but I want to make sure you know my appreciation,” William stated as he put on a pair of safety glasses and began assembling the electric toothbrush. This guy just wasn’t getting it. Did he seriously think I was just trying to be polite? He couldn’t figure out the fact that I didn’t want some weirdo doing things to my teeth? “Now, just wait a minute…” I started, but felt the dental mirror pressing down against my jaw. “Ah, ah, ah. No talking. Open wide,” William said and before I knew it, I could hear and feel the rubber toothbrush spreading a minty paste over my teeth. Did the school know that one of their students was playing dentist in the science lab? Where did he get these tools anyway? He even had the rinse and suction that he used frequently, as well as those dental picks that he used to get in between my teeth. It seemed to take forever. A couple of times I tried to speak to William as he was changing tools, but he never let me finish before he continued with the cleaning. Eventually, the polishing came to an end. I felt so relieved. However, William wasn’t finished. I watched him wrap a piece of dental floss around his gloved fingers. He looked at me and sighed. “Must I keep having to tell you to open your mouth every time? I told you, you can’t stop me from showing my appreciation, no matter how hard you try,” he said and forced my mouth open once more. I felt like biting his fingers so hard as he went about flossing my teeth and gums. That would certainly show how much I appreciated this unwanted dental procedure. However, I then realized that, at the moment, he was the only one who could help me with all those math and science problems. Unless I could find someone else, I’d be screwed. I didn’t want to do anything that might upset William and make him no longer want to be my tutor, no matter how strange and eccentric he was. The flossing was rigorous, and he made sure to get every single nook and cranny of my mouth. I was pretty sure I could taste blood by the end of it. Then came another rinse and suction. I hadn’t been to the dentist in years, so I was feeling a strange sensation in my mouth. I couldn’t deny that my teeth felt smoother and fresher than they had for a while. I signed and turned my head to my tutor/dental hygienist. “So, now what? Am I getting the fluoride treatment too?” I asked sarcastically. William turned to me with an apologetic look in his eyes. “Oh…,” he stated as he clasped his gloved hands together, “I didn’t think to bring that stuff. But if you wait just a moment, I can go and…”
“No! No, no, that’s okay!” I quickly interrupted, wanting this to end as soon as possible. William put everything away and removed his gloves and safety glasses. He kept the mask on, though. “There you go! Ending the school day with a fresh smile. Now you can go home and show those teeth off,” William said as he finally let me out of the chair. “Yeah, I suppose so,” I replied. William gave me a hard pat on the shoulder. “So, we’ll meet on Saturday at my place. Make sure to bring all your books and papers so we can go over them,” he said. I just nodded and started heading out. “I’ve got some tidying up to do, so I’ll be staying a bit longer,” he said, “See you this weekend.” I just waved goodbye and left, not even looking at him. What did I get myself into?
